Our yard had a visit from a Dodson and Horrell today.

D&H, in association with the RVC and 2 animal charities, is undertaking a research project into horses in the South East of England and we were one of 50 randomly-selected yards (well, for any statisticians amongst us it wasn't "randomly" selected in the statistical sense, but because one of our liveries phoned the helpline and was then asked if she could get 10 horses organised for a weigh-in etc). Anyway, I'm rambling....

Each person filled in a questionaire about their horse, their feed was weighed for information, then the horse was condition-scored and then weighed on a portable weighbridge. Kharidian (Roger) is 15.1 with shoes, and only weighed 417kg, however he was condition-scored 3.0 for neck, body and quarters (so his condition is just right) and it was commented that he has good muscle so it just goes to show how horses, like us, vary tremendously. The only other Arab weighed today is about 14.3, retired due to tendon injury, condition-scored 3.5 for all three areas and weighed 530kg!

The good news is that I'm definitely not under-dosing when worming - unlike a couple of the Highlands who weighed in at 600Kg+, when the wormer dose is up to 575kg!!

Its amazing how inaccurate weigh tapes are when you actually put a horse on a proper weighscale they're always heavier good to know you've got such an accurate weight to go from now though, what a brilliant idea, wish they'd come to my yard!

That is suprisingly light though for his size isn't it!
just goes to show, as you said they're all different!

They came to our yard about a year ago and I was surprised that K weighed quite a bit less than her weigh tape indicates, she was 420 as opposed to 510 with the tape , (she's the same as Roger, 15.1 in her shoes so about the same weight). Wish we could all keep portable weighbridges on our premises, make the guessing game so much easier !

They said her condition was just right too but then she was still being ridden and hadn't had 15 months off having a foal, don't think that they would say the same at the moment!

my mare is about 15.1 (in shoes)and weighs about 420kg when fit - was very lucky as I kept her at hartpury college when I was there and could use the weightbridge whenever we liked!

These replies make me feel better - at the weekend the only horse/pony that weighed less than Roger was about 12hh (but most are natives/native crosses).

Roger isn't what I'd call "fit" but he does more work than anything else on the yard. At the moment I'm only able to ride twice per week, doing a 5.5 mile hack in 1hr 20 and 7.5miles in 1hr 45mins - trotting or cantering 1/2 to 3/4 mile with only slightly increased resp. rate and returning (unclipped) with slightly sweaty elbows only; so not bad for this time of year.

Thanks guys,
Caryn
