hi, I picked my copy of H&H today and was delighted to read this in the news about the plans to bring back 'traditional' in-hand showing classes! It quotes 'some breeders have become critical of the 'modern' way of showing arabians, in which the horses head is positioned artificially high with the hindlegs out behind the body when standing up for a judge'
Wessex Group Arabian Group summer C Show will be introducing 'trial' classic classes well done Wessex!!! It also goes on to say statement : Show organiser Felicity Harper said : we hope these classes will redress in some way the unfortunate impression many of us have of the arabian Horse because of the manner in which it is shown' Classic classes will encourage handlers to show in a 'quiet and relaxed manner. The classes have been sanctioned by the European Arab Horse Show commission; both classic & modern sections will be assessed by the same judges. No horse entered for one style will be eligible to be shown in other. Each will have its own qualifiers for the European Conference of Arab horse Organisation A show at Towerlands..
theres plenty more in the article, it makes such positive reading I think - I just had to share! what great news for many of us on here who have felt so strongly about the 'frozen pose' for so long! see you in the ring???

This is great news and even better that the wider public know that there are lots of arab owners and breeders opposed to modern day practices in the ring. Well done Felicty for getting such good press, we insist on all classes at the Welsh Crabbet Show being shown traditioally, and what a lovely day it makes.
Roll on the time when once again the public will reconise the Arab horse as THE superlative riding horse

Fantasic news! Well done Wessex Let's hope more groups follow.
This is a great opportunity for Arab owners to attend shows who, like me, are completely put off due to the "frozen poze" and the noise brigade.

Yup going to buy a copy thanks for the info.
How would horses be received and judged in ring if the handlers mixed classic with modern? I vote for Classic traditional |

Wonderful news......and about time the tables turned and we once again show our Arabian horses as they should be shown. We are British.....lets keep our own traditional way of showing.!!!

North Staffs beat them to it - they offered Traditional showing classes a couple of years ago but sadly had to drop them because so few people entered.
We did, and we were the only entries - the talented and beautiful Taragun "won" the senior section and the Championship and our little yearling filly "won" the youngstock and Reserve Championship.
Glad Wessex are offering the classes but it was heartbreaking when we took part that a) no one else bothered even after all the hoo haa against "modern" showing b) not one spectator turned up to watch even though we were in one of the main arenas
Hope more people put their words into action this time
And well done North Staffs for trying! |

As Templars says, it's SO important that this show is well supported. This is our opportunity to 'vote with our feet' and get on the road to change.
Most of us have made plenty of noise about the aspects of modern showing we hate - now we've been given this golden opportunity to make change, we MUST make the most of it !
I'll be taking at least two |

Hopefully, in the near future owners will see this as an opportunity to show their stock themselves - as opposed to only chosen horses going into the ring via handlers. This would broaden the field visually and increase entries surely? We may even get back to entries justifying two lines of entrants........and who knows who would be placed where...? |

Many thanks for your kind comments. Wessex spent some time preparing its case (with the assistance of the AHS) to put to ECAHO and we were delighted when they let us run this trial. There are conditions that we have agreed to.
The comment about the the manner of showing at the International is accepted, but it will at least get the horses in the ring. If the judges are any good they should be able to look at the horse and not the way it is shown.
Wessex actually ran Classic showing classes at its Summer show in 2005 at the Bath & West Showground. The experience was similar to North Staffs but not quite so bad. Horses were entered but it got so hot they didn't go in the ring. I was not aware that North Staffs ran both Traditional amd Modern style ECAHO qualifiers a couple of years ago. Let us hope that Wessex has more luck. Both the Modern and Clasic classes at the Wessex Summer C Show will be ECAHO qualifers and we hope that this trial will be supported.

For the Crabbet qualifying classes showing has to be done 'naturally' otherwise you are disqualified. It has to be a good move to give the other arab horses the chance to move properly & naturally. Fingers crossed the classes get plenty of support. |

Brilliant idea and well done Wessex .......I would certainly support the classes but its just too far for us to travel to what is possibly the most Western point of the Wessex Group area |
