If I think Arabi will be a bit full of himself I lunge before I ride just for fifteen minutes or so I find if he wants a leap around its done on the lunge before I get on which is safer, if not if I am out on a hack he sometimes gets a jog on and does his Arab tail in the air canter on the spot thing I have a really long quite fast trot and make him work properly usually sorts him out.
My mothers old part bred mare was a live wire to ride too, i used to do circles in walk and trot, leg yielding etc for about 15 minutes before any canter work when i schooled her, that way she was ace , but if i wanted to wind her up a bit not that she needed any encouragement i used to do 5 mins sensible schooling then do turn on the forehand into canter ( an excersise at the time, i recently learnt ) which from my point of view was real fun....she was a great horse...so sadly missed.
