Soooooooo cute, you do realise Ingrid will think she is a sheep and cyd will think he is a horse Specially love the pics of Ingrid jumping in the air like a spring lamb.... she looks so er.... sheepish If I was closer I would come and bottle feed, I love doing that (although middle of the night feeds do get you down). Best of luck to all of you. |

Sue.....that is just the most emotional photo......bless those sweet little babes, cuddled together for warmth and companionship
Having experienced rearing our own orphan when Mum died shortly after giving birth.....we decided to bucket rear from the start....foal never looked back.
Just a helpful tip...when you decide to offer milk in a bucket.....can I suggest you use a shallow basin in the first instance until baby has learned to only dip her lips in the milk....just in case she submerges her nostrils and inhales milk into her lungs. Apologies if I am teaching my Mum to suck eggs
Rearing our orphan and seeing him thrive and grow and completely normal was a great joy and he was the most lovable chap, a real people lover.
Enjoy, she is truly adorable and such a happy little soul. Should be great fun watching Ingrid and Syd`s frolicking antics in the Spring

Babs, I am so grateful for any help, Thank you so much. I know we have to treat her horse like and we are trying so hard not to pet, very difficult. I understand your tip and will do.
I will do anything to keep her healthy and going. At the weekend I seriously had decided to call it a day. How can I with this foal to care for? Any help is most appreciated. Thank you all. |

Sue.....it becomes easier each day and the sooner she is used to drinking from a bucket, you can then fill her bucket to the amount she requires overnight and get a good nights sleep again. After a few weeks, we used to add a handful of foal creep pellets into the milk, and when foal drank to bottom, there was a nice porage which he quickly learned to eat and enjoy.
His stable companion was a huge teddy bear a friend gave us, whom he would curl up with when tired and who would put up with his rough play, without complaining!!
His field companion was a quiet welsh pony mare and she got used to coming to the gate with him every three hours, and stood quietly by, whilst he slurped his milk. When he came in at night she would wonder off and graze until he went out next day, when she would be waiting to greet him. He grew into a lovely 16.00hh gelding and has only had one change of ownership since we sold him as a well adjusted yearling in 1985 and is still doing well
Enjoy your babe

What beautiful photos of the two little friends - such a pair of little darlings. It was a brave decision to close the other sad thread and start looking forward to the joy this precious baby will bring you, and we shall all look forward to watching Ingrid and Syd growing up. |

Sue, that is an amazing photo of them both cuddled up together!!! I wish I was nearer to come and help with the feeding but not yet!!!
If the surrogate Mummy doesn't work and all you need is a companion to teach Ingrid to be a horse!! then you should consider having my old girl Aquarius - she absolutely ADORES foals and all small horses which was highlighted for me when she was put with my neighbours three mini shetlands - she mothered them so well!!! Bless her, she is 32 on the 17th February and since spending her summers with my neighbours tinies she has blossomed!!!
I am dying to see photos of Syd out with Ingrid in the arena!!!
Glad, you are feeling abit better - little Ingrid will help you get over the shock and sadness of losing Fanny.

They look lovely all snuggled up together.
