Does anyone do Western with their arabs and if so, do you know of a good trainer either in Scotland or the North of England that I could send Merlyn to for Western education?!

Many thanks to you both! I have been on the Scottish Western Site, but there doesn't seem to be much listed for trainers. When I spoke to their chairman, he suggesting bringing Merlyn to one off their clinics and teaching him myself from what I was learning.........in principal this sounded quite a good idea, but on sitting thinking about this, it occured to me that there was no way in God's green earth that I would know enough to teach the horse!!!!
So I really want to find someone reliable and patient that could school him for me. It's really so that my husband can ride in any case. He prefers the Western way and although knows how to ask for various things, he wouldn't have a clue about schooling Merlyn properly |

Hi, my trainer is just starting a new Western club which will hold training sessions etc - unfortunately we are in wales so a little far for you to travel. WES were very helpful when I wanted a trainer who would come to me, rather than me going to them. Good luck |

It might help for you to go and observe at a local clinic. I would also recommend that you have a lesson to see if you like western. The biggest difference will be your rein contact. Once you understand the basic difference it is easy to convert an already english trained horse. The horses seem to understand that the different saddle means a different style too. Another problem is if you have him trained, you won't know the cues to ask him to work for you. Some trainers get them very 'hair trigger' so you only have to breathe woah and you be over his head like a bicycle with its fron brakes on! Sorry not trying to put you off. I will pm you a scottish contact who might be able to help. |

Thanks again for all your help guys.
I have to say that I'm not really interested in Western Riding as a discipline for me, but I wanted Merlyn schooled that way for my husband to be able to come and ride with me. The other big thing I figured about Western, having been to various events to photograph, is that the horses are all so calm and balanced looking and given that Merlyn is a real sharp cookie, I thought that it may just make him think a bit more about what he is doing and how to carry himself.
I back Merlyn last year and he has the very bare basics of walk and trot with a little bit of canter from me, he will need to start again which I am doing now and then I want to get him learning Western before he learns much more English if that makes sense. |

Steve Parkinson used to ride Western on his purebred gelding Tric-Trac (I think that was his name but he's not on AllBreeds).

Thanks Kofihorse, I did find her name on the WES site. I wondered about her though, as her website doesn't really say much about western, its all more natural horsemanship she seems to offer. I guess the best thing to do would be to phone her! |

I would love to do Western riding with mine, it's so much more relaxed for horse and rider than English! |

RESULT!!!
Morag Higgins is a big Western fan and trainer, so Merlyn will be going off to see her at the end of April. Thanks Kofihorse again for the suggestion. |
