By now I'm sure you have seen pictures of the absolute devastation in Haiti. As many as 100,000 people could be dead. Survivors are sleeping in the streets among the dead, too afraid to go back into buildings. The people of Haiti need us now to survive, and they will need our help for a long time to rebuild.

We wanted to share with you all of the ways you can help on Care2.

I can barely watch the news at the moment Lynda. So sad and very frustrating for those sending relief out there. It seems people are looting and robbing now. I worry good will sent might get into the wrong hands as it did with the Tsunami fund.

In the South West we have Shelter Box who do the most marvellous job of actually getting their 'boxes' out there before anyone can pinch them.
I love to see their green boxes on TV at the devastation site filled with essentials doing the job. Their tents house I think 6 people. What a grand job they do. They would be high on my list to help and of course Oxfam.

Nature is at fault here but humans as always suffer.

Something like this puts my piddling little problems into stark perspective. As sue says, it is difficult to know where to send money where it will go to good use and not get swallowed up by greedy fat cats.
Oxfam is always a good option i believe.

As with All charities there has to be some costing, but not to give money because of the fear of your money not getting to the needy , will not help them , EVERY LITTLE HELPS !

I always donate via DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee), that way I feel fairly sure that the money will go where it is needed most.

It is so distressing to watch the news at the moment, I totally agree .

You can help the animal victims of the devastating
Haiti earthquake

Dear lynda,

I contacted you on Friday to let you know about our emergency relief response in Haiti. I have some more detail now that I want to share with you.

Our initial assessment is that it could be the worst natural disaster we've ever faced.

The world has been shaken by the news reports of the widespread and catastrophic destruction in and around Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince. Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti in this incredibly difficult time. Many people have perished and been seriously injured, and homes and buildings around the capital have been devastated.

Humanitarian relief agencies from around the world are now taking the first steps to assist the hundreds of thousands of people in desperate need of medical care, food, water and shelter.

Of course, as is always the case with disasters like this, many animals are also suffering and in need of care. IFAW has therefore partnered with WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) to launch a coordinated animal relief response. Together we will lead a coalition of animal welfare groups to help the animals of Haiti.

Please donate now to help us bring relief to the animal victims of disasters.

Haiti has an estimated 5 million head of livestock, a large stray dog population, native wildlife, and, of course, an untold number of companion animals.

Our first priority will be to treat critically injured animals. We're also very concerned about the possible outbreak of rabies, leptospirosis, and other diseases that can pass from animals to humans, so we'll be vaccinating animals as quickly as possible. And we'll be distributing food, water, and basic medical care.

As I write, our team is in the Dominican Republican preparing for this critical mission. They're setting up a mobile veterinary clinic, and we need your donation to help stock it with medicine, syringes, bandages, food, and other supplies.

Once the human relief efforts have taken hold and security is in place - and depending on the needs we find on the ground - the team will deploy and begin their lifesaving work. We're not exactly certain of all the challenges we face, but with your help, we'll be prepared for anything.

Please give now. Your donation will be used immediately and where it is needed most to help animals in Haiti and animals in crisis around the world.

Then forward this message to all your friends and contacts. With your help, we will be able to bring lifesaving care and comfort to so many suffering animals.

Thank you,

Fred O'Regan
IFAW CEO

p.s. IFAW and WSPA, the world's two leading animal rescue organisations, have joined forces in the face of this enormous disaster to create a coalition called the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH). ARCH will combine the resources and vast experience of our two organisations and of numerous other animal welfare groups in a coordinated effort to help the animal victims of Haiti. Please donate now to help us bring care and comfort to suffering animals.

I think people ARE doing something. My little girl's school is collecting every morning this week. My mum's chaurch are donating, there is a donation going from facebook, there are collections in town centres. Most people put something in every morning at school, even if it's just a handful of spare change. These are hard times for everyone, but still people are willing to give to such a very, very worthy cause.

My comment was not "don't give", i just meant that you have to think carefully before you give, to ensure you're giving to the right charity. One where your money will go furthest, and one where the things you particularly care about are covered. Everyone's different, and we don't all have time to post. People do care , not everyone can (or wants to) put down how we feel about such a horrific event, or the donations they have made.

This is a very weak reply from me Lynda, sorry. I did think about all the animals out there suffering, it is sad and i wish i could do more to help, but seeing all the human tragedies makes me want to help them first.

There are so many ways to help even Celebrity Big Brother is giving all its 'phone in' money to the Haiti fund.

(I've just voted Stephen off)!! It's one way to help even if it is only a very small amount of money to donate.

I just can't bear to see the poor children alone, parents dead and no food or help, what will become of them? I pray someone will help them first. What a horrid world we live in.

Hi Lynda, sorry I was one of those who viewed and didn't speak up - I was short of time and promised to myself to post later

Everyone has very good points, but I also think it's an important area that obviously gets overlooked, and the people who do help obviously need funds for this too.

I'll be donating, as soon as I can, thanks lynda for the links x

Sorry I didnt mean to upset anyone, I just saw all those people had looked but not commented as though it wasnt worth a comment as with all disasters its never nice to see children being pulled from rubble, and we sent a donation immediately , there is always a good support by humanitarians , but so often the animals are over looked as not being important enough. I am just glad there are organisations who will help them , but they need our support.

Hi Lynda,

I was one of the busy ones who read and hadn't time to reply at the time but I hope it comforts you to know that our church collection last Sunday went to Haiti and I have donated personally as well via DEC. You are quite right to bring this to everyone's attention and every bit does help so whatever you can afford everybody...
