It just goes to show - no amount of education can make up for real experience, gained over years and years.
This is very happy news |

Yippeee Babs, I was worrying about her all last night and like everyone else, had prayed for a good outcome this morning.
I am so very happy for you all. What a brave mare she is, wow, these arabs girls are such a force of nature, and the trouble is that some vets don't realise their strength of character and how much they really do mean to those they own.
Never doubt your instinct!!
All the best,
Sandra xx

Phew Thank Goodness for gut instinct. I can't imagine bute is a strong enough pain killer to mask a fracture, bet the 1st vet is feeling pretty silly now |

So glad you followed your instinct babs, i could not understand if the vet was saying it was a fracture why kharisma was not in distress or at least sweating or shivering a bit!!! I really feel for both karen and yourself for the stress you have endured over the last few days. Tara (as i had said in a previous post) was also lame on christmas day with a bruised heel and she also was not to happy about putting her foot down, thank god i did not have the same vet! who knows what he might have said!!! Tara is fine today, even managed a little run around with her grandson eddie! I am just so pleased all has ended well for kharisma |

You are so right to go with your gut instincts. My mare would have been PTS at least twice by now if I had listened to the vets. Even the best ones make mistakes. A little time usually will tell and you know your horse better than any vet.
My old mare has just recovered from a similar foot abcess. I can see how a fracture was suspected - very painful and horrible to watch them hobbling around.
I hope Kharisma is feeling much better now the nasty gunk has come out. Happy poulticing!! |

Kharisma is feeling better today....still hobbling but now taking some weight on her foot. Bright and eating with gusto. Will carry on poulticing for a couple more days
Fingers crossed, hopefully she will be much improved again tomorrow. It was a very nasty abscess and very painful.

great news it was so right to go with your gut instinct to think if you were an owner who knew very little that had of listened to the vet |

Kharisma is continuing to improve...now weight bearing on her foot It was a huge abscess and has left a large hole, so still very tender but improving by the day
The Emergency vet called out on Boxing day has been on the phone several times and apologised for the distress he caused Karen and myself, through his wrong diagnosis of a fractured femur. Thank goodness we did not go along with PTS!!! We put our trust in our Vets but this case proves....if in doubt...ALWAYS insist on a second opinion, before making such a devastating decision.
One wonders how many horses have wrongly been PTS following a Veterinary mistaken diagnosis. Thankfully Kharisma is still with us and hopefully may go on to live many more happy and cherished years for Karen

Well done, Babs, for going with your instinct! What a lucky girl Kharisma is to have you and Karen in her corner! I'm so pleased that she's continuing on the road to recovery. |

What a relief, thank goodness it was just an abscess, so easilt treated. My mare went out sound one morning and couldn't put her foot to the ground when I brought her in that night, took me ages to get her from the field to the stable. That was an abscess.
