I am so devastated to tell you all that Sam has just been pts at Leahurst. I received the dreaded call just before 8am this morning. He had been colicking badly through the night and the vet was ringing to tell me that unless they operated again, which she didn't recommend, then we had to make the decision to let him go. He isn't suffering anymore and i know we did the best we could for him. He has been the mainstay of our yard for over 15 years, head of the herd, the one to ride if you just needed a break or wanted to rely on him to be good. The last show he went to was a complete suprise to us as mum had only found out it was on an hour or so before, he hadn't been shown for nearly 4 years due to me having the children, he stood Ridden Champion and made us all so so proud. His manners as always were impeccable. We can remember him through such wonderful times and this is what mum and i have to hold onto. Mum was there when he was born, we never expected him to leave us like this.
Here is a picture of him with his mum Sadie - Sadie was a part bred welsh/part bred arab and was the most fantastic mare in the world. She was a very hard act to follow but Sam chose a different path and was wonderful in his very own way.

He towers over her! This was taken one wet summers morning very early by my mum. Its how we want to remember them, happy together. I know she will be looking after him now, bossing him around happy to be with her boy again. Rest in peace our beautiful boy me and MaMa love you so much xxx

it is with a heavy heart that i write this post. Sam was PTS this morning. Carol received the call we were dreading that Sam had colicked 4 times over the weekend and was becoming distressed so she gave permission to end his distress. I have asked her to post some pictures of him so you can see what a lovely boy he was.
There will never be another horse that will touch my heart like he did. He was my once in a lifetime boy. I loved him and was so proud of him. I guess i knew when i saw him so ill that he wouldn't come home. I will be paying for his treatment for years but i don't begrudge a penny because i know that i had to give him that chance, however slim.
I console myself that he passed on while still in his prime. He was young enough to still be magnificent and knew no failings of old age. My boy knew no loss of dignity. He was proud and kind and led his little herd with swiftness and integrity. He had his mum with him up to last year and he was his mother's son.
My heart is sad and full of grief.
Sam -Gallingayle Summer Sprite -I will never forget you and i love you always.

I'm so so sorry to hear your sad news.
There has been so much sad news in the last few weeks I was hoping that Sam would have made it.
Thinking of you on this dreadful day.Look back on the good times you had together and think that Sam is now at peace.
RIP SAM

So sorry to hear such saddening news, you gave him every chance but it just wasn't meant to be. I too lost a special horse this time of year, taken far too early by a tragic accident. Time is a great healer and soon you will think of him with joy in your heart rather than sadness, you were privlaged to be a special part of his life. Thinking of you and your mum as I know only too well how you will be feeling,
take care,
Amanda |

I am so desperately sorry to hear this - I lost my beautiful Lisra a little over three years ago in pretty much the same circumstances and just so wanted it to be different for your boy. I feel what you've been through these past few days with the hope surging against the despair. You know you did everything anyone could. Sleep softly, Sammy xxx |
