Some of you may know from my mums thread on T+C last night that yesterday after finding Sammy in a terrible way he was transferred to Leahurst last night.
They have operated on him and it seems part of his small intestine had gone through into part of his stomach and this had sealed it off and stopped the toxins spreading through his body, this made it all the harder to diagnose as he wasn't presenting as simply as a colic and temp/colour and heart rates seemed ok. He was in theatre for about 4 hours and they rung me at around 2.40am to tell me he was out of theatre but they were only giving him a 30% chance at that point.
He has got through the night and is alert this morning but the next few days are critical whilst he's in intensive care. I know he's in the best hands and we had to give him this chance. The vet had said whilst he was at home as he wasn't responding to pain relief that the only other thing she could do was pts. I rang our old vet who saw Sam as a 3 hour baby and he asked all about his symptoms and said if was an insured horse i would already have him there. That was enough for us we had to give him a chance. I have said that now he is through surgery if there are any further complications i do not want him operating on as the chances are so slim and the surgeon said that if he was her horse she would do the same.
So all we can do now is wait and hope so much that he pulls through.
My mum delivered him 15 1/2 years ago and we had his mum Sadie until she was 27.
He is our special boy.

| So sorry to read about Sammy. Can imagine what your going through, but as others have said he is in the best place in Leahurst and they will do there very best for him. They were fantastic when my stallion was in there. Hope he continues to progress after his surgery. |

Don't give up hope. I know what you are going through and it is just awful. My cob had this happen to her this year and had 15 feet of intestine removed that had gone into her stomach. Her chances of survival were extremely slim. made even worse because she had a three day old foal at foot. The vets were amazed that she survived the operation. For nine days it was thought that she would die because her gut would not work. She stood in a corner, head hanging down drooling with tubes in her for days. I went to visit her every afternoon and massaged her stomach for hours. She fed her foal throughout. That was in April and against all odds both mum and foal survived and are doing so well, you wouldn't guess that she had been ill at all. Keep positive even if it looks bad as a corner can be turned. Good luck to you and Sammy.

Vets have just called, there is a slight improvement in Sam today. Im trying not to get excited over this as there are still many complications that can arise but at least it is a positive. They keep putting a tube up his nose and drawing off the fluid off his stomach as his intestines are refluxing it back in. Upto last night there had been a lot of fluid coming back off which was suggesting his intestines were still not functioning. There could be 2 reasons for this - a blockage still which would be worst case or the intestines are still very inflammed from the surgery. Today there is a reduction in the reflux fluid which suggests that there isn't a blockage and the inflammation could be subsiding. They have let him nibble at grass which he has enjoyed and they say that the chewing action produces saliva but also stimulates his gut to start expecting to have to work. He is still on very strong meds but they are hoping to ease of the lidacane (sp?) infusion tonight. This is the best stuff they can give him apparently they give me an update on the costs everytime they ring and i keep saying to them we've got this far its no good going cheap on him now just give it to him! So better news than i was expecting, he's still positive and looking over his stable which is good too.

We are just getting ready to visit him now but my baby has just pooped! She has such great timing for journeys, although better than having to change her midway there i suppose!
Will give you all another update once we're home, its a 160 mile round trip so not round the corner. |

| Gosh, if he's eating some grass already, that's a good sign. Maddie (my cob) had the tube down her nose and fluids drawn off for days so don't be put off by this. Do you know if he is passing any dung? I have everything crossed for him. |

I lost my Sammy earlier this year; he was almost 32 and I had him for 29 and a half years. I hope your Sammy will last as long.

Hope things improve and continue that way. It must be SO stressful for you and I feel for you, waiting hour by hour for news.
Let's hope the fantastic fighting spirit of the Arabian serves Sam well now when he needs it most.

| Had an update from the Leahurst earlier today and he is off the drips and his stats have improved!! His hydration has improved and he hasn't been refluxing. He is not out of the woods by a long way but its at least positve news. They are trying him with some food this afternoon and then hoping and praying he can cope with it and it doesn't cause another blockage. I bet he's starving! He loves his food so he will try and bolt it down, they were leading him out for some grass again today which he enjoys. At least he's still fighting its surreal thinking what he's going through and we're not with him, i think visiting him yesterday really cheered him up. Can't wait to see him again xx |
