Have any of your horses got a winter coat yet?
Am asking because this time last year Kazzy was like a yak he was that hairy and this year he's hardly grown any at all so far!!
I thought they grew and shed their coats according to sunlight and not the weather conditions.
Am getting abit worried becuase I intend to winter him out and if he doesnt grow a good thick coat then he might end up with about 8 rugs on at night

| Our 2 year old is like a teddy bear but my 19 year old has quite a fine coat this year, but that could be because I have a waterproof summer sheet on her so maybe she doesn't need her winter woolies yet? |

Mine has her winter coat, but it's not much thicker than her summer one.
She comes in for the night at this time of year, but she's never been rugged, no matter what the weather. Never been bathed tho, in the 10yrs I've had her, so I presume all the oils in her coat give adequate protection.  ( One of the girls at the farm says she must be teflon coated - no matter how muddy she gets it brushes straight off when dry  )
She copes fine with the cold - the only time I feel a bit guilty is if it's throwing it down as well, she sometimes comes in a bit shivery, but she carries plenty of weight and a large haynet soon warms her up.

| My fattest girl has grown a thich winter coat so ive had to clip it off her or she will never lose weight but my other three have only just started to get a bit fluffy. It has turned cold though so i have had light weights on them. |

All of mine have winter wool and are resembling hill ponies again, summer is way too short these days  |

My mare (Welsh x Arab) has quite a thick coat, but my pure bred has a fluffy neck but his body doesn't look much different to his summer coat. He always feels warm though and still has a huge grass belly....
Both are wearing rugs during the night and i take them off during the day (as long as it's not raining) |

| My purebred mare has got her winter coat, it is thick on her bottom and I can tell she has her winter coat as she changes colour from a brighter bay in the summer to a mahogany bay in the winter. She does live out 24/7 and has only started having her rug on this week. |

| Al's coat seems more dense, and his legs are a little curly but not hairy at all... same with mica the pb! Dont know if they've wintered out before, but we have lots of hedges and a field shelter... which they used a lot in the summer! They dont like the wet ground, try to tippy toe round it.... |

| my half bred mares hardly got a coat i clipped her last weekend and you can;t even see the leg lines you would have thought i clipped her legs and all lol. my stallions not that hairy either but he doesn;t get hairy and feels the cold so already in a heavy weight rug and the welsh has been hairy since august!! |

Must be just him then
His head and neck is going hairy but the rest of him isnt has thick.
He can grow a beard in the winter time and has fetlocks like a welsh cob they get that hairy but this winter he hasnt started growing any yet.

| I've got one that resembles a yak and the other has hardly got any winter coat. The only thing i can think of is that my mare wears a flyrug all the time and maybe this has kept her coat down. |

Mine is semi-yak - we have the most fluffy huggable legs and neck with beard decending - I tried to tell her that beards look better on boys, but boy you should have seen the look she gave me! Then under the rug - just moved from lightweight to middleweight - she is short and gleaming. It is a shame I am working so much or I would leave the rug off more, it is just I know the yard won't change them and in their opinion she should be wrapped up to the nines as a poor delicate Arab! That is beside the fact that she is just a field ornament at the moment as I won't start to back her until next Spring at the earliest.
