I have recently had to take some medication that has made me gain masses of weight, and am getting a bit worried about my poor mare! As i'm not going to be able to get rid of it anytime soon i just wanted some opinions on what you thought the maximum a 15.1 arab mare could carry comfortably for hacking and popping the odd 2' jump? i know people always say they are weight carrier but i would hate to be hurting her or making her uncomfortable!
I would say about 12stone at a guess but depends on the horse.
I weigh about 10.5 stone at the moment and im a size 10/12 and about 5'4 and have competed on my 14.3hh arab mare all summer hacking and jumping 3ft and she can go all day. My friend rode out with me on my mare the other day and she weighs 11.5 stone and my mare carried her fine on a long hack.
They can carry more weight than you think they can. xx My 14hh part bred still carrys me and pops over small fences.
Yeh I agree with joanna. much more. My mum used to have a lil 14.2 mare that used to carry dad out on quiet hacks he must have been nearly 12. Im sure youll soon find out if your hurting her etc.
If you have a well conformed arab, then I don't think you should worry. Don't forget they used to carry men all the time! I would be concerned with some of today's "show" arabs with very fine legs...
