Sazzlepants and I are doing the 32km CR (yes I am getting nervous!) so if anyone has any tips I'd much appreciate it!

We're entered for the 160km ER. But not sure if we'll be there yet. Pony still not quite 'right' after being spun @ Euston Park. Will reassess next week and decide then. |

Oh no Gemma, what's up with the lovely M??
We're entered for the 16k NCR on the Saturday, first party for Tuki and I'd rather him come home and think that's easy and fun so we're only doing the little one as a start.
Lauren - enjoy the views, pack layers and rugs in case of weather changes, take it nice and steady and you'll be fine, it's a great ride, you'll love it, very different from Windsor |

She was unlevel at the end. Vet put it down to either a stone bruise or jarring in the foot. She's still not 'right' but the ground has been so hard it's difficult to tell whether she's just feeling that or whether it's still the same problem.
She's still on rest, and I will reassess with my own vet early next week if there's no improvement.
4th attempt to get to Firle with M and looks like it will be 4th time unlucky again! |

I got a schedule for this and thought I might like to give it ago - but have never done any edurance or pleasure rides before. How is it different to sponsored rides? Bit late for this one, but would be interested to know for in the future |

Sallie will probably take a late entry if you're quick!
It's sort of like a sponsored ride but no jumps.
So if you were to do the 16km NCR (non-competitive ride) you simply have to complete the 16km (10 miles) within the speed parameters (which I THINK are between 8 - 12 kph) which should be easily achievable.
The route will be marked, and you'll also be given a map and a talkround.
Simples! |

Oh, and tips for Lauren!!
ENJOY!! Just relax and treat it like a NCR. Settle yourselves into a rhythm and stick to it - much kinder than stop-start. There will be a steep climb up onto the South Downs - take this steady as it's early on and you don't want to exhaust your horse too soon. I've not seen the map yet - does the 32km go past the Long Man? If so, then same applies as that is a STEEP hill!
Slosh your horses down if it's hot. Don't apply too much water if it's cool as if they start to shiver then the HR can go up. Use a rug if needed.
IF the pone is sound, I'll be there so feel free to come and find me and have a chat. I'll let you know my number later when I get home (assuming the paperwork is waiting).
What else would you like to know? |

Great sounds like quite a few of you should be there then!
Ha ha I did have a laugh when I read the distances you're doing (160km!!!!!!!)- and there's me worrying about 32km!
Thanks Gemma, that's all really interesting. I haven't received the route yet so no idea which way we're going. I suppose regardless we're going to have some steep parts
Presumably if you go up, you have to come back down....! Do you get off and lead for any steep downhill sections?
Completetly daft question but I need to know! I don't put any boots on Agonia at home, but is it worth booting her up for the ride just to be on the safe side? Obviously she has worn boots before (when she was being backed) so they wouldn't come as a nasty surprise to her!
Ummm what else... in the last week before the ride how much work do you normally do?
Following that, the days after the ride what do you do?
Thanking you muchly in advance! Lauren (who is simples!) |

Yes you've got to come back down and yes I usually get off and walk. As you can't go faster than a walk, you may as well use the opportunity to give your horse's back a rest and stretch yourself out.
Boots are entirely up to you. I personally wouldn't - I don't like to introduce anything on the day of a ride that I've not trialled in training but that's entirely up to you.
I taper the work off in the week before - won't ride after Weds but don't forget to taper the food as well otherwise you run the risk of tying up.
Rest after the ride - the general rule of thumb is 1 day per 10 miles (16km). I like to add another day if they've had a long journey but again it's all trial and error. What works for M and I won't necessarily work for you guys. |

Shouldn't have read this post am thoroughly depressed - mine and Dulcie's season/year never got started and has now ended! Have had to pull out and no more rides this year (have lost loads of money on entry fees). She has mildly tyed up and we need to get to the bottom of what has gone wrong. Not a good year allround from my early health problems and too late starting her fittening.
I think she is fed up about it all as well!
So our new regime starts now for the winter and fingers crossed 2010 will be our year!!
Sorry for sounding so depressed....
Firle sounds like a lot of fun - have a great ride everyone |

We had a horse early this year that mildly tyed up (At the Golden Horse Shoe) We started him on something that helps before a ride, by giving it too him it makes sure he is well hydrated.
The travel mix has also helped my little racing mare. Also by using the electrolytes that goes with it (Contains an ingredient that helps the muscles)it has helped the muscles, re tying up.

Had wanted to do 40k and 32k and had even persuaded crew that the trailer wouldn't be too smelly to sleep in.
However hoof trimmer cancelled last Friday and finally got an appointment with another trimmer on 15th and no riding until trim is done.
By which time we will have missed closing date for Bramshill and don't want to enter until know everything ok...
Have fun everyone! |

Oh Caroline I'm so sorry. What an awful year. I hope you get to the bottom of thing's quickly with Dulcie.
Thanks Pauline, I'd absolutely love to do the training ride in Tilford but its the age old problem of sadly having no transport. Ah well, I really will start saving soon!

Well, touching wood furiously, it looks like we'll be there. May change classes but we'll be there nonetheless.
Easy to spot: Number 1!!!! We're arriving Friday evening and are there for the duration. |

Cinny - have you spoken to the ride entry secretary for Bramshill? They may take a late entry. It's a FABULOUS ride. If you can't get to Firle, it'll make a good substitute. |

Gemma - great to hear, hope to see you!!
We're number 116 (riding on the Sat in the little ncr class), come and say hello everyone to my new boy Tuki who will think he's going to a show and I've no idea how he's going to react when he realises it's all very different. We're hopefully riding with a little haflinger mare and owner who's not done endurance before, should be a funny couple |

Well, we're back - earlier than expected as we were unfortunately spun at the 80km vet gate. Lame on the RF which was the same leg we were spun on at Euston Park a month ago. She trotted up sound this morning but unlevel on a circle. So will be calling vet out asap to investigate.
Gah - horses.
Time to take up knitting. |

Oh no Gemma, how sad. I hope you get to the bottom of what it is, she looked fine when I saw you in the half way vetgate yesterday. Knitting, no way, far too dangerous with those pointy sticks
We had a lovely little ride. Tuki was all perplexed at what was happening, he was convinced that he was going to a show when he saw the horses being trotted up so was all excited at the farrier check and then floated up and down the field for the vet who was amused and wondered where the audience was
Luckily we were paired up with a little unflappable icelandic chap who provided much needed confidence in the right places - especially past the photographer. I so wanted some really nice pics from our first ride, instead I have some of us doing lovely half passing with me laughing at the silliness of my horse: http://radfoto.co.uk/20090912FirleSatBeacon/imagepages/image571.html http://radfoto.co.uk/20090912FirleSatBeacon/imagepages/image572.html
The first half of the ride Tuki was like normal, like riding glue, but then about half way through he suddenly seemed to perk up and pick up the pace. Once we got off the Downs and onto the newly harvested fields he started to love the canters, he then found his powertrot button and just sailed home. Took off the saddle and his HR was 43 straight away, he was obviously much fitter then I realised!!!
All in all a lovely day for us, we just need to do some more to get Tuki used to his new career - I suspect the rest will come. At least I had brake problems at one end of a field towards the end, that to me is a lovely problem to suddenly have |
