What is a good age to start feeding a joint supplement?
My 4 year old has been backed just over a month and all is well. My reason for asking is my older horse who is 16 (welsh x arab) has arthritis in 3 out of 4 legs as well as navicular in one front foot.
She was first diagnosed with a spavin at age 5, but after an injection into the joint she remained sound for almost 11 years.
Should i put my 4 year old on a joint supplement now to try and preserve his joints for as long as possible...?
Personally I think you'd be wasting your money to feed a proprietary joint supplement but you could feed something as simple as apple cider vinegar (unpasteurized and at least 5% acidity) or linseed. Both have effects on the joints. Do a Goodle search (or Bing!) to see all the benefits.
I know of quite a few event riders who give their horses a maintenance level of Cortaflex and swear by it; it certainly won't do any harm. Quite a few racehorse trainers also use it.
