I just want to take on the discussion about ridden Arabs on a bit from Sue's C Show thread to say how strong competition is among Arab geldings now.
There were always more geldings than mares and stallions in ridden classes, but the proportion of entries are drawing wider apart from year to year. At the Midland Arabian Festival on Sunday there were 25 geldings competing for one HOYS place - twice as many as mares and stallions entered.
The quality was fantastic, the production great and it was a tough task for the judge. To get a gelding to HOYS now means you have to have a really superb specimen, excellently produced and the standards are better than they've ever been.
Hats off to the geldings and their owners/riders!

Totally agree Roseanne. And it's the same in the in-hand ring as well I'm slightly embarrassed to say that a few years ago I never watched the gelding classes and usually went for a coffee or something whilst they were on. It's a totally different story now, there are so many stunning geldings in the ring and watching them is just as exciting as the watching the other classes.

Well maybe..............just maybe...............people are starting to GELD their colts, I say it over and over, only the best of the best colts should keep their parts. The quality of geldings is definately improving. |

Hi Roseanne, I love watching all the ridden classes when I have the time to go to a show, I really envy the riders having the competence, ability, courage and a quality horse. I have a good horse in HT Orient and many have tried to persuade me to try and go for it but I lack all the other qualities . Plus when I entered my first and last class where the judge tried to ride him he just wouldn't move !!! ha! ha! how embarrassing was that and yet I know just how beautiful he can move and show himself off. I think I shall stick to my endurance riding but I still envy all you excellent riders, well done!

what a lovely boy - I think gieldings are great and they are always my preference. Its nice to see so many of them doing well in showing and dressage and of course endurance and jumping.... |

He's a beautiful boy Jutta. Oddly I don't have too many of my chap in the ridden ring. One of these days I must sit down and send of Peter and Marilyn Sweet a large order going back through the years!
Will dig out some others...

Here's my little gelding Kazbah (El Kabah x Bazz-Swirl) that I bred myself.
Not a prolific show horse but he did win the Senior Gelding at The Classic a few years ago which I never tire of telling people
With his late mother in the background.

I agree the gelding classes are very good,But the strange thing we have a Gelding for sale a yearling, He as all the attributes to be a great ridden Horse, but no interest at all,He is advertised on the sales pages here and we have only had one time waster phone, He is almost a blank canvas, Apart from he as been travelled shown rugged had the clippers feet done and show trained, great condition and a Tall boy, But no interest Mair BBA

There will be Mair, because he's beautifully bred; your horses are always lovely! I suspect it might be a combination of the economic climate and the fact that he's still a bit young and there are a couple of years to go before he can be ridden. Bet if he were rising three or ready to back you'd be inundated. If he were backed you would have people clamouring; there's a real shortage of decently backed, sound, sane Arabs!
He is a beauty though! |

Trouble is Rosanne,as breeders, if we have to keep them untill then and at a cost of about £1,000 a year minimum, then at 3 years old it has cost us the same as anyone is prepared to pay!, not to mention all the extra's, what was the saying ? fools breed horses for wise men to buy? never a truer word good luck with selling him though Mair he looks simply stunning |

Here is a pic of my 3yo gelding, Dark Prince(Imad x Cacharel)....this was taken in a mixed breed youngstock class earlier this year. I am a gelding convert, he is the easiest horse to do, nothing phases him, but maybe that is just cause he is Pure bred

Hi all,
I would love to share some pics of our wonderful gelding Aja Ben Rajah who I feel very honoured to own. We have been extremely lucky as he gained his HOYS ticket first time out this season in two years with the wonderful Clare Fitch who rides him to perfection. He is also ridden by my 14 year old daughter showing her truly versatile the arabian horse is!!.

I'm a Dark Prince fan - think he will do very well in the ridden ring and get better and better as the years go by!
Tracey I wish my daughter would ride my gelding! She has a natural seat but has concentrated on netball. I have four kids and none rides!! Lovely boy you have and how satisfying to have your HOYS entry!! Good luck... |

Lance at a local show some years ago, which I went to because he wouldn't load to go to the show I planned!! My neighbour was there and took photos and they're some of my favourites.
