Today Lusty is 35yrs old, and I have had the pleasure and privilege of being owned by him for 33 of those years. For those who saw him last year at Malvern, I can say he is looking just as good as then, but after much soul searching I decided not to enter him again this year. He could not better what he did last year, and if anything was to happen to him at Malvern I could never forgive myself. If he settled well in strange stables it would be different because apart from that I know he thoroughly enjoyed himself last year.
We know each other like an old married couple and have shared both good and bad times together. The worst beyond doubt was the day just over 6yrs ago when I found his companion Count Vanity in a cold sweat in great pain and distress. Half an hour later with the vet in attendance, Vanity died. It was the worst day of my life. Lusty and him had been together for 25years and he missed his friend as much as I did. To lose any horse is a terrible thing, when it happens like it did to Vanity it takes a long long time to put it behind you and move on. Vanity was the gentlest arab you could wish for, and a real friend.
Lusty has never formed a real relationship with any horse since, although my friend's welsh pony mare attached herself to him and followed him about as if there was a piece of string between them Lusty tolerated her but she adored him. SHe died 2yrs ago and since then he has made it clear he likes his own space, so he has his own paddock and shelter, where he can see and talk to my other arabs over the fence. He is happy with that.
I know I will never have such a long time with any horse again, if my new filly, Tokara was to live as long as him then I would be 90! But I will enjoy my old boy for as long as I can, I think he is good for a few years yet
Happy Birthday old man, I love you

Thirty three years together, that must be a near record. Happy Birthday Lustre....in human years you should be having greetings cards from the Queen.
Heres hoping you continue to thrive and survive for many more `happies` Lustre, shared with your beloved friend

Happy Birthday Lusty!
We had an amazing Malvern last year, and I cried quite a bit - BUT nothing choked me up as much as seeing your wonderful old man strut his stuff.
He is a true legend, and you are both sooo lucky to have had each other for so long

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUSTY I was such a privilage to meet him at Malvern last year Annette.....what a wonderful old boy he is, all credit to you for keeping him so well & happy all these years. We got quite emotional seeing him in the main ring where he knew he was "king" what an old poser. Heres to you & him and wishing you many more years together.
