I am trying to get Freddie an all singing and dancing rug with a neck cover and have seen a couple of bargains. The trouble I find is with the sizings. He is about 5'9, (altho they are a little on the big side, he can get away with it except in a Masta which is too big).
I am afraid to order 5'6 incase it works out too small. 5'9 Rhinegold, Olympian and Shires fit him perfectly but unfortunately the bargains are made by Kingshead and Weatherbeeta which I've never had dealings with, any ideas?? (Freddie is about 14 3hh and very narrow shoulders)

Weatherbeeta rugs are a great fit for arabs. I have a 14.3hh mare. She is not what i would describe as narrow, but not too broad either. She is wearing a 5 foot 9 weatherbeeta Landa at the moment. For shows I will buy all my mature animals (apart from exceptionally big horses) a 5 foot 9 Weatherbeeta. A 5 foot 6 weatherbeeta will only fit large yearlings and two year olds - although saying that I have a two year old colt who is wearing a 5 foot 9 Fal Viking and it looks like its painted on!
In general I would say that a 5 foot 9 rug is the average size for a fully grown arab.
I have found weatherbeetas and FAL's to be the best fit for arabs around the chest and the high set neck. |

| Hi Sandi, my arab is now 15.hh but a very small build for an Arab and she takes a 5ft 6 in the Kings head Rugs, but be warned, i use to use Weatherbeeta for years until my local saddler stoped stocking them so i changed to Kings Head, they are OK, but only really have a life span of i year max. They start to let water in etc. I not use rhino.... very exspensive but i think that it is money well spent as they come with a three year garantee.... Good luck |

Hi there,
I have two weatherbeetas for both my horses, a pb arab and full bred arab and would say that these are a perfect fit. Pb Arab is 14.1hh and is in a 5ft9 and Full bred is 15hh and is in a 6ft.
Mine are the old style aspen combo (full neck) which I believe have been replaced by the landa. The oldest rug is at least 4 years old and is still looking good and has plenty of use left. It never leaks and always stays in place.

I have a 5'9 weatherbeeta Orican combo that i bought before Xmas. It is on my 14.2 / 3 arab gelding and fits him perfectly. It is quite deep, comes down to his knees and almost touches his ears one end and the tail flap is huge!! it is a heavy weight and is very warm and cosy. I also have a 5'9 fal rug that is a brilliant fit, neither rugs slip or rub shoulders or any mane out.
I am chuffed to bits with both of them.

The absolute bargain weatherbeeta is the orican combo but only in 5'6 (£50)-obviously be too small . Their Arion combo is reduced to £66 so not too bad and by the sounds of it, Weatherbeeta is the one for arabs!!! altho the kingshead is only £34, now that is a bargain!!(- but only if it fits)

Thanks for the warning Lucy,
I will pass on the Kingshead in that case - dont want my lad getting wet!! I have a Rhino summer turnout and yes they are good!! Dont want too spend more than necessary this time as I prefer him in when the weather is bad but at the mo his stablemates have left and the majority live out, so Im hoping its a temporary measure.

| You have to be careful, my friend got a combo for her horse but i dont like it because its quilted, like, and he developed rain rash under it! IT HAS TO BE WATERPROOF!!!!! |

I bought a Weatherbeeta Landa last year and it's the best rug I've bought to date. It really covers the back end far better than any of the others.My other rugs cost @£140 but were too warm!! The Landa was @ £50 and came with a free fleece! The clasps are going a little rusty but it doesn't bother my horse! |

I'm with Michelle on the Fal Vikings. My Arab and Andalusian are both in them, the Arab (15.2hh in a 6ft and the Andy (also 15.2hh in a 6ft 3in). They're both in them (out 24 hours) for the fourth winter with no tears, no leaks, a great fit and top warmth. The Arab has a Weatherbeeta quilted shoulder bib (large size) underneath but the Andy has nothing and there are no rubs on either. They cost a bomb but have proved to be really cost effective. I also have one with a detachable neck cover to put the Arab out after shows when he's been washed but I'd be careful about neck covers as if they're on for too long you lose mane hair.
There's a Fal Viking on Ebay now but it's 6.3 which would be far too big for you but the latest bid I saw on that was only £51 (sure to go for more though...) |

Both of mine have got the Landa Combo rugs my 14'3 mare is in a 5'9 and my 9 month filly is in a 5'0.
i would definatly recomend the weatherbeet rugs this is the second year my mare has been wearing her landa and it it fine apart from a bit dirty!

I have Shires, masta, weatherbeata and Horsewear rhino. My 14'3 mare has 5'9, my 15'2 filly has 6' and the 18 month old filly is just outgrowing her 5'6 so she will have a 5'9 soon.
I have found that all of the above are good, horsewear tend to come up small, weatherbeata come up big and the others are about right. None of them have left marks from rubbing and are all washed and re-proofed every spring. Personally I find the full neck shires great, the weatherbeata half neck is good (No rubbing of the mane) and the Rhino a bit tight anbd awkward in the front.
Good luck with your rug hunt, it will be a case of trial and error as what fits one arab will not necessarily fit another.

Well, the search isnt over yet!!! Annoying really cos I have a separate neck cover but none of my rugs have the rings to attach it to. I also have a second hand rambo but the person before me took out the neck lining and also the velcro on the neck and the rug front is inclined to undo (which leaves him a bit less covered). I wouldnt be bothering but poor lamb has opted to live out as he has no mates when he comes in since they left and I want him as snug as a bug in a rug on these awful nights. Dont intend leaving him in it unless its really bad weather.
Of course if anyone knew of someone looking for livery in this area with a horse that likes to be stabled at night in bad weather - then I wouldnt need to buy a rug, ha ha |

| My mare must be slight then as she is fully grown and I've always had her in 5'6 and they seem fine. The only one that has been a little tight across the chest is the one I've got for her now which is a Masta |

My 14.3 is very narrow cross shoulder all his rugs are masta 5ft6, and fit perfectly, used to have Rhinegold but found they stretched alot - spent £80.00 and it lasted 3mnths now it dosen't even fit a 16.1h thorobred. Neck covers i have probs with they always too big i put them on come back an hour l8r + hell be standing in the field with it over his head - how i don't know!!!

After many year & prob too many rugs to even want to think about - I love the Weatherbeeta rugs - they seem to suit the Arab & American Saddlebred "shapes" very well!! Although I've found this season that the ever so cheap & cheerful Olympian winter NZs are the best fit ever on Rowan whos bum high & slighter in front - hes 15hh but takes a 6ft rug - to fit his big poweful quarters! They fit really well in the front end!

Yes, Ive found the Olympians are a good fit. I have a stablerug and fly sheet in this make. Cant seem to find a nice heavy turnout though, so looks like it will be the weatherbeeta.

Well my gelding is about 14.3hh as well and he is very narrow, All his rugs are 5'6 these include ones made by Rhino Rambo Masta Whetherbeeta, These all fit fine...the only thing if any thing i find about the 5'6's on him are some can be a little short length wise. He has a whetherbeeta all in one That he wears at night under all the others it goes all up his neck, now this is a 5'9 only because the shop had ran out of 5'6's but it fits fine a little long but keeps him snug as a bug! My mare is a 5'9 she is 15hh and wide...her stable rug is a Masta and this is a little too long...Just like out clothing sizes they all vary!!!

My 14.3 is in 5'6 Rhino and Orion 'freestyle' high necks and they fit perfectly. She is quite broad but fairly short in the back.
Love the rhinos, but the new orion heavy weight seems excellent too and very cosy! It was a beautiful blue too and my lovely little grey looked stunning - until the frost defrosted and she rolled in the MUD!!
(she's out 24/7 with permanent access to shelter-come-stable)

Hi Arabic,
I bought Fal "Slumberdown" rugs for Quinn this year. They were really cheap (I got them from eBay) and they have turned out fantastic. He wears 6' rugs and they fit perfectly in that size. So I'd say the sizes are true in their cut. I bought a 200g with a detacheable neckcover for Autumn/spring and a 380g with neck cover for the winter. They have been excellent rugs, good and warm and never moved on him. I think I paid £100 for both rugs and neck covers, so a real bargain! We are really exposed where we are and the wind and rain is dreadful, but he has been dry and cosy all the time and the only time I actually put on both of these rugs on him (poor soul looked like a telly tubby!) was just before Christmas when our temperature dropped to -20 degrees!! But he only had them on for a couple of days and then back to the 380g on it's own again. I also have a shires rug for the summer with no insulation and again it fits really well. I found in the past that Horseware rugs weren't deep enough on my horses, but that was a few years ago and I see that they've added deeper styles to their ranges now. I only once had a Kingshead rug and it didn't last very long before it started to leak!
Hope you find a decent rug for Freddie, as it is can be difficult to get something that fits and is user friendly too! |

I am a big fan of Horseware rugs. Dennis is 15.3hh and a bit but he's got a short back so he wears 5'9 rugs.

I have seen a few of the Slumberdown but not at the bargain prices you found. Well done!! The weatherbeeta I was looking at has sold out in 5'9 so I may soldier on with the second hand rambo until another bargain comes along. Trouble is all the nasty weather could be nearly over and next year if he has some stable mates, I will be alright with what I have but knowing my luck we will be snowed in during February!!
