Hi,

We are in the process of building another 3 stables and want to put rubber matting down in them. We have matting down in the rest of our stables, but don't want to use the same company again (not very helpful, fitting man had a disgustingly filthy mouth ).

Walter has rung up a company called Copa Plastics in Leicester and asked for a price list and sample - has anyone heard of them or used them? The other brochure we have, is from Fieldguard - again, has anyone used them?

We would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,

Liz Downes

Hi Liz,

I used a company called Quattro from Cumbria. They were great - even sent the mats before they got the cheque. Loads of different types and weights etc. I didn't ask for what I wanted - they advised me what would be best as my stables don't have drainage.

Can't comment on the companies you mention!

Sorry I don't have their number with me.

Vera and Dennis

Hi Liz,

We have rubber matting in all our stables and used a company called Kraiburg.. Very helpful and do several different types depending on how your stables drain/ Will sort out the number for you if you are interested in phoning them.

hello Liz,
This is my first posting on this forum.
Just to say we have Fieldguard matting the self draining M2 mat system which is wonderful. We are hopefully having more stables built and will definately have the same again. The only drawback is the cost which is about £680 per 12x12 stable. We have Equimat in our pony stable which is fine but is just a floor covering not a self draining system like the Fieldguard M2.We also have Fieldguard wall mats which are good too.So it depends how you want to use it.
To introduce myself I have 2 pure bred geldings;
3 year old Aarin who was bred by Paul Atkinson and has been shown by Cullinghurst this year and 2 year old Kalinisi, the Natsir Apal gelding refered to in another thread who was bred by the Maxwells and has been shown by Emma this year.

We have Kraiburg rubber matting and it is excellent. Fitted by Earlswood Services who are main agents for Kraiburg and very professional. Don't know how I ever managed without it. Their telephone number is (Coventry) 024 76 670990. They travel nationwide.

Good luck

I'm also looking to get rubber matting soon and am intending to use Fieldguard M2 as previously mentioned, but, have heard comments which have made me hold off for a while.
-One comment was that some horses lose weight as they are reluctant to lay down. Any truth?
-Can cause capped hocks and elbows. Any truth?

I have considered the horse lost weight and would not rest due to stable conditions and the capped hocks were maybe due to unsuitable matting but before making the plunge, i thought a little more input would help!

k mackenzie

they help prevent capped hocks as no hard concrete gaps in bed and if you start on a slightly thicker bed than you need they get used to lying down then you just decrease the bedding till you are all happy! I would have rubber stables for al my horses as long as i can afford it! Luckly my livery stable is matted already but if i moved id get them asap!

I used equimat on floors and walls, really recommend them, not so heavy to lift and haven't moved..I only need a little shavings to collect any urine etc...horses are happy to lie down on them too. Definately recommend.

We have used our Fieldguard M2 mats for 8 years now with no sign of any troubles. All the horses sit and lie down quite happily on them.We started off with lots of bedding and gradually reduced it to about a bucket full per day.I like the draining system as the stable is never wet and there is no smell. We just sweep it up every morning and wash the floor.

hello Caz,
We are off to Cullinghurst next week to bring Aarin home, who is your new baby so I can return the compliment and say hello?

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for the all the input regarding the matting.

I think that Walter has made up his mind (he holds the purse strings!) that he is going to use Copa Plastics matting, however they didn't send a price list when they sent the sample , so we are just waiting to find out how much it is going to cost!! Hope that the mother-in-law is not within hearing when the quote does arrive.....!

Shall keep you all posted as to whom we do end up using.

I've had Fieldguard M2 mats for many years, and rate them highly as they are much softer and warmer than most other mats, although you do need a good fall on the floor to facilitate drainage.

A warning regarding mats in general and alleged savings on bedding costs - my gelding hated having limited bedding and used to splash his front legs occasionally. As a result he got into a habit of staling all over his stomach, and therefore rugs too (even though I now put a full bed down on top of the mats). He'll even do this out in the field. I can't begin to describe the work involved in keeping him and his rugs clean. Leg washes weekly throughout winter, rugs being washed all the time, and he has between 2 and 4 of every type of rug required so I can keep up with washing them!

Several vets have actually told me that geldings should always have a decent amount of bedding, as this is a common response to staling on mats with insufficient bedding.

Best wishes,

Renee

I have Kraiburg rubber mats (treated the horses a year ago as I was having problems getting decent straw). When the last four bales are all mouldy on a Sunday and you can't get any more until the next weekend it means either dirty beds or insufficient bedding.

I still give good straw beds (was told that I should only use a small amount of shavings or similar) but I only put it in two thirds of the stable and if the horse sleeps near the edge of the bedding I have no worries about capped hocks or elbows. Because I had my stable base laid with a slope to the front I had the mats with studs underneath and they are not sealed so the urine runs between the joins and then under the mats. I had them fitted at the beginning of December last year and they are brilliant, no smell, easier to muck out and the beds are much drier as the urine only goes as far as the end of the mat the horse wees on.

I did try other types of bedding but as the horses break the dung up and spread it around as they walk it took much longet to muck out and the beds didn't look so clean. I went back to straw and am very happy with the system, wish I had done it years ago.

Regards

Barbara.
