When I broke my back our TB was only 11 and so went out on loan.
He had to come home, he was coughing, weezing, and generally short of breath. That was near Southall, Notts.
He went up to Chapel en le frith area after he had recovered, for several years, whilst on loan, and since bringing him home I havnt had a problem either. It must have been the rape. Hes 23 now. |

I used to ride out for a hunting livery yard and the owner went to the doctor with worrying headaches over a two week period. It turned out that the agro-chemicals in the rape seed growing around the farm were having a serious effect. Even if you drive past a rape seed field in the still sunshine, you may find it hard to breathe.
I am told the single payment scheme will stop farmers sowing oil seed rape because they get a decent subsidy for it. The man who informs me (as a journalist) says the fact that farmers will get one, single payment in subsidy for his land will stop him having to sow this crop. Hopefully they will return to good old wheat and we can all see this horrible crop as a colourful but poisonous fact in our countryside...
Off the well-worn soap box again, gasping... |

Hi,
I agree with roseanne, the smell is awful, I live in cheshire and the fields are full of it round here, luckily theres none near the horses so I cant help there, but that could explain why I feel lethargic and get frequent headaches because I live a few fields away from a field full of the stuff. What exactly do they grow it for? B***** stinks!!!!!! and I should imagine if your horse suffers hayfever or allergies it will react badly.

This year I have got it right next to me!! I keep bees and they love the stuff but cant use the honey as the farmer sprays it with some awfull stuff. It stinks its a vile colour and I went to the doctor with a persistant cough and she said it was the rape pollen that is really bad for you, she said if the general public knew how bad it was for health it would not be allowed to be grown so extensivly and there should be a health warning about it. Also there used to be just one crop a year but now there are 3 spring summer and late summer so you get the rotten stuff from april to september. It never occurred to me it may affect my horses too. I hope Roseanne is right about farmers being weaned off growing it. Heather mcbx |

The reason the EU has wanted people to grow it is because it produces oil and they need this not only for margarine and stuff but for development of alternatives to the oil that is refined for petrol. What they call an agro-chemical. That's why it has the headachy thing about it. The stuff left over after they've pressed the oil out is used for animal feed... I think doctors should have a bit more integrity as a body of medical professionals and tell people things like Heather's doctor said. Why should we be given no choice? |

Both my horse and I are allergic to rape. I first discovered this in Dorset 15 years ago.. We went for a ride and both came back wheezing and unable to see through the tears.
Since then it has happened twice. I do not think there is much you can do about this but luckily the season does not last long.
