I have found both of mine second hand (but practically new) in the local paper, I have also seen some on ebay. They are quite pricey new but the Arab Emporium or Halter Ego sell them new with a huge choice of styles and colour. I think they both advertise on the banners on this page. Good luck with your search |

Trog Wilson makes the most lovely bridles - you can get one either off the peg or a unique one to suit *your* horse at VERY reasonable prices! The other good thing about Trog's work is that they are leather and designed to be humane - which many of the plastic skinned steel cable ones are not (even after modification, I would still not inflict those nosebands on my horses, Arabs are just too sensitive).
Trog is not on the internet, but maybe one of the Cornish people will let you have her address/phone number.

Hi Akramgold
Arabian Emporium also sell in hand bridles, Madeline is a member of this forum.
As for in hand bridles being inhumane, I would say that the only time damage is done to the head of an Arab while wearing a cable bridle is when the handler is too heavy handed and constantly shanking. I use cable bridles for my girls, they are more than happy in them and have never had any marks left on their face by using them, I would NEVER use them on my Arabs if they would cause them any harm.
I would suggest you look around at what bridles other people use in the inhand classes and on what types of head before parting with any money. Flat leather bridles are nice but not as pretty as some of the cabled/jewelled ones. Gold/brown looks nice on Chestnuts, Silver looks great on grey etc.... Look in magazines at photos of horses similar in colour/type to yours and see what halters look the best. I'm sure that the companies that sell the halters would let you try a few on so you can pick the right one for your Arab were at the same show as your horse. A final note, cheapest isn't always the bestest :) Good luck.

We had a very graphic (and painful) demonstration of what these halters can do some years ago on one of the Preliminary Judges' Courses. Quite an eye-opener - and they didn't make a mark on the 'victims' (course attendees) either.
I don't have my ECAHO rules to hand, but as far as I can remember, the wording regarding these cable halters is something to the effect requiring a backing to the noseband to reduce the amount of pain that can be inflicted. Reputable European dealers sell modified halters, but ones bought off ebay US won't have modified nosebands as they are not required there.
Personally, I will only use larger diameter conventional rolled leather noseband halters, or flat noseband ones on my horses. Remember, these cable halters are essentially thin steel rope skinned over with plastic. I would certainly NEVER use them on foals.
Arabian Emporium used to sell nice handmade rolled leather halters, but I am not sure if they still do, which is one reason why I recommend Trog (the other reasons are that she is very genuine and her bridles are excellent!)

As far as I am aware Madeleine only sells bridle's that are 'backed'. A couple of years ago I bought a Grandeur bridle from the States and as it was coming to Europe the noseband was backed...As with anything you buy you just have to be careful and actually check out what you buy.
Anne
p.s I have also bought bridles from Trog and have been more than happy with the quality of her work. To quote Trog 'I am more than happy to burn much midnight oil to provide an owner with the 'perfect' bridle'. It seems to come down to personal choice. |

I totally disagree with what you are saying about cable halters, whether backed or not. Only damage I have seen on horses was done by heavy handed trainers/handlers!! I would be very interested to hear exactly what was done at your demonstration with inhand halters which proved painful to the attendees without leaving any marks!
At the end of the day it is each to their own, personally I think the old fashioned thick rolled leather halters are just that, old fashioned. They can also inflict pain if mis-used. Just for the record, my bridles are backed, all except one VERY SOFT Suede covered one, which I might add has never left a mark or hurt the filly that wore it (See photo below)
