I do not know the different regulations in different countries so I am writing to ask if frozen semen can be used from stallions that have passed away and for how long after the stallion's death can his semen be used or be made available for purchase by breeders?

Once a stallion has semen frozen it can be used for years after his death, but there is alot of regulations with different countries ,the stallion would of had to have different health checks for different countries ,so most people only have a certain amount avalible for each country and some won,t be able to supply certain countries, i no new zealand and america demand alot of extra health checks and it gets very costly ,i hope this helps a bit. |

What a pity this opportunity wasn't available a few years back - I would have loved to have bred a foal by your stallion GONORAR, Vygoda, gorgeous horse...

Natalie is right. There are different regulations depending on where the semen is being shipped to which is why it is important to know the geographic target before you extract the semen.
For stallion owners wanting to ship sement abroad you'll need to check you calendar carefully because booking a stallion for extraction can clash with 1) the natural breeding season and 2) the showing season. Lots of competition horses are booked in over winter months which is why it can be difficult to find someone to take a stallion. It really does need careful preparation and planning (and a large bank account).
Re how long it is viable, I don't think there's a time limit. It's simply a supply limit.
All these details are available from Tullis at Whitchurch and have been available for many years |

Well, you live and learn!! I'm really amazed that if there is a supply of semen still available say 200 years down the road and taking into consideration today's technology it could happen, the semen could be used.
Thanks everyone for your input!
And thanks Basilisk for your comment on Gonorar, he left us far too early.
But the whole discussion has made me think about the future and what to do.

Hi Jayne,
I checked this with Pippa at Windsor House a couple of years back. I was told that so long as the stallion was licensed, blood-typed or DNA'd , and the use of AI was approved by the appropriate registry at the time of collection, then there isn't a problem. I tried some semen from a horse who died in '96 last year (having made sure there wasn't going to be a registration problem). Sadly I didn't get a foal, but will try again with a younger mare in a year or two's time.

Hi Jane,
I think the quality of the semen when it’s frozen will effect it’s shelf life, we all knew El- Shaklan was a quality horse, the same can now be said for his semen.

Yea a good thing to ask when enquiring about frozen semen is about its mobility ,every dose taken is tested and it varys from 12% to 50% if a stallions is below 25% it has very little chance of getting anything in foal via this method,i learn,t this after a very costly expirience. |
