I'm having a nightmare!

One minute the sun is shining and my un-clipped Section D is slowly cooking under her rug so I take it off then the minute I leave the yard it rains so she is soaking wet!!

I just don't know what to do for the best. She had almost a whole week of rug off a fortnight ago and now she hates me for putting her rug back on, she is much happier with out and covered in mud!

She doesn't suffer rainscald and has a lovely wooly coat (not so lovely when she malts!) so I am tempted to leave it off as although it is raining it doesn't get cold!

HELP!!!

What is everyone else doing?

Sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and spurs excite me!

I would say she should be able to manage without a rug, maybe put a lightweight on if you need to keep her clean for a particular reason, eg riding?

She's unclipped so she should be fine but if you are worried just put a summer turnout on her & then she will keep dry but won't get hot.

Mine are both clipped out but are just in summer turnouts & a fleece for night time as it's been so warm over winter!

Rug Haiku

Rug on, no, rug off
On off on off on off on
Are you mental yet?

oh, how I do sympathise!

I have a Connemara who bakes under a rug and then, if I take it off him, it's guaranteed to blow a force 10 or pour or both and then he's pacing miserably trying to get out of the cold!

I've left quite light weights on the rab and the Welshie....and they are fine....but poor Jasper ~ I can NEVER get it right!!!!!!!

I've now decided that I will just have to play it by ear day by day...last night rug on..this morning, rug off. Not sure what I'm doing tonight though..will have to wait and see!

Her rug will definately be off completely by mid March!

It's enough to drive you crazy!

Not quite in answer to your question but last year my liveries ponies coats were moulting much faster and started quite a lot sooner then Dennis's. I decided to remove his rugs and hey presto, he started moulting like mad and lost his wollies a lot quicker then previous years. I think it was the daylight rather then the temperature that triggered the molting.

This year I didn't even have a rug on him until November and he has a lot less coat then in previous more rugged up years - weird eh!!

My PBA is rugged when he's out with a high neck on or full neck if it's v cold or threatens rain / snow. At night he has stable rug on, quite happy like this but FAT !

TB x mare has two rugs on - thin stable one under Wug Plus during the day and underrug plus stable rug at night. But I must confess to having only had her stable rug on the past couple of nights as it's been mild and calm. But moult ! I've never seen anything like it - mind you she was a woolly mammoth when she arrived here and was as thin as a rake. Now putting on weight and moulting

Taking half day today - going home to ride

Lynda.

My 'fat' filly is nude at night with lightweight NZ during day to keep rain/sleet/ snow off as no shelter. Others have lightweight rugs day & night. All go nude if it is a nice day on the weekends.
