Hi All
Has anyone experienced the locking of the Patella ( Stifle )
Ive been told that if you build up the muscles around the Patella, this helps.
I have a 3 yrd old fell pony , due to straight hocks in the breed they are prone to this, Just wondered if anyone has any stories to wht the future might hold ?
Thanks in advance
Cazza

Hi Cazza,
I know two ponies that had the operation some 10 years ago, a Welsh B and a Welsh D, both were operated on at three years old. Both are fine, in full work with no problems at all.
Just could not believe my friends luck that she owned two ponies with exactly the same problem!!

Hi Cazza
My purebred gelding has had this problem on and off for years, he is now 17 and it doesn't affect him at all most of the time. Its very strange, we can go months without it happening at all and then one day he will come out of the stable or in from the field and it will just lock. Its awful to watch, but he just drags it until it clicks back into position!
It doesn't seem to hurt him and it has never happened whilst i have been riding him, it is just when he has been standing still and then goes to move that leg. When it first happened i was really concerned and my vet said the best thing to do was to build up the muscles around the joint. That didn't really stop it happening and as it is not very often i decided not to have it operated on.
I wouldn't worry too much if it is not happening very much, my boy has led a normal life and done everything, he's got a mean old buck on him so its obviously not that bad!

I should have said that both horses were successful show horses Cazza. The B is Greenlinks Olympics Rose and the D is Gristhills Welsh Prince. Don't know if any welshie peeps on here might have heard of them.
In both cases building muscle didn't help and as both were for the show ring she decided to have them operated on as they can't lock up in the ring can they!!
But as Louise says unless its a problem I would not worry about it. I saw these two ponies lock up many times and it really didn't appear to hurt, we would just back them up a step or two and the ligament would snap back into place.

Hiya Louise, Vera
Thanks very much for the advice, George's was both legs and he couldnt move and was clearly in pain, He was bought as a show pony, so i'll guess i'll have to see how it goes.
Up hill straight work, deep sand is what the vet said, He is on pain killers for two weeks , then the vet is coming back
Thanks Again

Oh dear poor George, it must be awful to watch when both legs stick. I wondered if i should get some painkillers for when it happens, its hard to know if they are in pain or not, it must be uncomfortable though.
Keep us updated with what your vet sais.
