Hello! Very excited as I am doing the riding clubs event at the King Alfred's Tower ride next month!! This will be jai and I's first go at an endurance ride, and I just wondered if anyone had any tips as to what I should be doing training-wise for the next month, feeding-wise as well. Know I should carry water, anything else? Also should I change his feed - he currently just has a bit of chaff, a handfull of pasture mix and equivite supplement as we have loads of grass. Will his normal tack and boots etc be ok? What is the countryside like round there? Is anyone else going?? Sorry, so many questions!! E.x

Hi Emma,
If Jai is fit enough for Riding Club Activities don't worry about his fitness. I believe you will only be doing 32 klms (20 miles). No different tack is needed except to make sure it fits well. My Dollar does upto 50 miles on a couple of scoops of Alfa A, sugarbeet and a multi-vit suppliment. So I wouldn't change his feed! Is he an Arabian or a cob type? The heavier type of horses usually need a little more crewing to get there heart rates below 64 bpm. Does the Team have a crew meeting you at certain places on the route?
You will get a map ect about 10 days before, it will be worth your while to know where you need to be at what time to finish with a chance of being in the first 6. You will be told how far it is - distance - between check points. Do you know any Endurance riders in your area, they would help you with times/distance ect.
Oh, and don't tell anyone from Area 2, I've said anything. hehehe
I'm sure you'll have a great ride, maybe you'll do more rides after this one. Just a little more info, next year the Alfreds Tower ride is going to hold the European Championships. Great to have them in this country. So make sure your picked again next year, you never know you may end up on the Telly.

Hi Shirley I am riding for Thames Valley Riding Club, so not sure what area that is? Yes it is the 20 mile ride, I quite often take him out for 3 hours or so and they said it is a 7 mile an hour optimum speed so guess thats about how long it will take/ He is a 14.3 8 year old arab (in my signature pictures), sorry should have said! Umm sorry to be thick but how do I check his heart rate? Yes I would like to do a few more, I thought this would be a good starting point as I get to ride round with the others! I'm hoping he will take to it, he has always loved the sponsored rides we have done in the past, and despite sometimes being a bit fizzy, very rarely gets excessively sweated up or anything. E.x

HI there Good luck for Alfreds tower, youre horse sounds Ideal so don't worry. Its sounds like he will easily make the speed. Just one word of advice is that the riding club championship is often won on accurate timing. Take a stopwatch and come in dead on the optimum speed. I won the riding club championships 4yrs ago and we won it by being accurate with our timings. One of the horses owners steped in the niGht before when we had only 3 people. The following year when I was managing the team they lost It becuase they weren't accurate on there timings. You can always do what we did if you are to fast which is to loiter out of site until the right time. Might see you there, I will be the very tired and not very sober rider(I'm doing the 100 miler the day before and hopefully we will finish so will be celebrating the night before) riding a bay stallion in the 50 km class. Hi Kirsty Thanks for the advice - just hope the rest of the team can keep up Here's another question - do peple plait the horses of just leave them?? Also with the optimum speed thing, do you have to be on the speed between each checkpoint or just overall? Sorry - lots of questions!! Emma |

Hi there If your horse has a long mane its sometimes easier to have it in plaits (leave them hanging down though) so you can cool the horse easier. It also depends if there is a turnout prize. If there is just make sure you are all clean and coordinating. I think its just the speed overall not the speed between cp that counts, Any more questions feel free to ask like \I said before it usually won on having 3 sound horses and accuracy of timing Kirsty |

Why I mentioned distances/times between Check points. If you hope to ride at the optimum speed, it helps to know how long its going to take you to each check point. If you are a little late/early at a check point, you know to speed up or have time in hand.
My email address shirley@charlton78.freeserve.co.uk If you mail me, I'll dig out the conversion sheet and send it to you.
