My purebred Kizzy is a bright bay with two white socks and a white blaze. This summer she has developed a few large white spots, one on her flank, one on her cheek and one on her tummy. This is the first summer they have appeared. Her dad, African Dancer is *I think* what is termed sabino ~ chestnut with high white legs which are speckly in pattern and a broad white blaze.

Are the white spots now appearing due to her age or genes or both?

Just curious as to the reason.

Thank you!

These are 'birdcatcher spots', and so far, the experts don't know the cause

Very interesting this, as my Sharni has these. What age is Kizzy?
At the weekend a horsey neighbour was telling me that at Leahurst [liverpool]they'd discovered a link between these spots appearing and a sucesptability to COPD .
Sharni has COPD and these spots. They'd taken lots of photos of her friends horse who was in for treatment [ for something else---not coughing] to use in their lectures about this link. Seems that some horses are genetically pre disposed to getting COPD and it generally starts around 7 or 8 yrs of age.

MinHe~ there is lots of information on google about birdcatcher spots for me to trawl through so thanks for pointing me in the right direction

Joto, Kizzy has just turned 16 and hasn't yet shown any sign of COPD so can't help there.

I was sure they were a colour/gene thing so it's really interesting to hear there's more to them than meets the eye.

I know quite a few - mostly non Arab - chestnuts all with these white spots that have just appeared, and in one case - which is an Arab - seem to appear and disappear????? None of them have COPD - or at least not yet.

I had a chestnut filly who developed 'spots' at 2 years, went down the copper route and it made no difference She did seem to get less each year - and I was very relieved when people stopped asking if she was an appaloosa
