Dear ALine people. Hope you can help; in Febthis year I came across a very badly neglected youngster. Locked in small airless dark stable, no bedding, just piles of poo, feet dreadfully overgrown very thin, lousy coat, dull eye, very depressed. Turned out to be a Welsh Sec C/D black colt 22mnths old, who had been passed between 4 "owners" since birth and then abandoned in Oct 08 when the last "owner" went to E.Africa on holiday, and never came back. Various people on the yard had fed him, watered him and chucked straw over for bedding since then, but nothing consistent. He owed the yard about £500 for livery and the yard owner said she would have sold him to the meat man but would only get £50 becos he was so poor. Cut to now; said pony is now 2yrs 2mnths, gelded, fully vaccinated, insured, vetted (passed, and vet loves him) registered with the Welsh Cob and Pony Soc. and going to his first show on Sunday! He's been fed++, feet and teeth done, turned out daily and handled lots! He's 13.2hh and will probably make 14.1 ish. He is really beautiful and looks/moves/behaves like a true star. He has Dannaway and Nebo lines in sire and g'sires, which are very good Welsh D cob lines. His dam is a Sec C. I have spent, and continue to spend a lot of money getting and staying at this point with Welsh Pony and am now facing difficult decision as cant afford to keep 2 horses. T'other is The Fat Arab -15.1hh of 20yr old Crabbet (ex-working stallion) bright bay attitude! I love him to pieces - he's kept in the best of everything. I rescued him 12 yrs ago from the most dreadful place and we've come a long way. He has slight soundness probs (dodgy tendon/windgall on back leg) and we're happy hackers these days with continual vet support n supervision. Does anyone know of a good home for Welshy? I dont want to advertise him cos you never know whats going to happen and who will buy him and I basically dont trust "strangers"! I don't want payment for him (I bought him off the yard for £400) but is there anyone out there who could guarantee him a kind home for life? The other option (I will now get jumped on, I expect) is to have TFA pts; rationale for this is he will NEVER part from me, he is old and has soundness issues which require constant supervision, careful management and meds. He is very sharp and quirky and needs calm, sensitive consistent treatment at all times. He has had a lovely life with me for the past 12yrs and no-one would ever hurt or abuse him again. Any Ideas? I've come to this sad state of affairs cos of an unforseen financial crisis and having to act to ensure that all the animals are OK. (GSD n Burmese cat as well - both old, both utterly spoilt, and both wonderful companions and friends) They will all be OK when and until this is sorted, but desperately need to find a safe place for Welshy or the above described "safe place" for TFA. Please dont be horribly judgemental in your replies; everything was fine in Feb when I rescued Welshy - but I just cant manage at the moment. The steps necessary to carry on mean that I'll be on "reduced means"' OK for one horse - but not two. Thanks for reading this, I feel a bit trapped by it all, and thought you would have some good ideas.

My hat goes off to you.... For your honesty and your "balls" to post this. No one has the right to judge, as i'm sure many of us have all been through bad times at some point or another, i really do hope you find a kind and loving home to help sort things out, wish i could help but at present i'm unable to. I'm sure you will do the right thing for you and yours, wishing you all the best. xx |

Well done you for being so honest, It might help for you to put the area you are in. Also instead of giving him away why dont you try to put him out on permanent loan so you can safe guard his future. You may be able to home him as companion untill he is a bit older. Other people may be able to help in different ways.
Good luck x x

Sorry I have no advise, but it takes alot of guts to be as honest as you have & ask for help when needed. You are obviously a very caring horse owner who loves her horses & puts them first. I sincerely hope that there is someone out there that can help you. Good luck. Lisa |

which general area are you in? I have just sold a three year old home bred Arab colt and his buyers 'might' be looking for a gelding companion for him, pending him being gelded in the autumn. this little chap sounds like he could grow into a riding pony for the son who also rides. |

Thanks dear ALiners for your kind, supportive answers to my rather fraught message. I'm in North Kent as are both the Arab, and Welsh Pony. He would make a good companion as he is very sociable and goes out with different youngsters in his big field as they come into the yard for breaking/training etc. He is very good to catch - comes rushing up to you, walks and trots in hand, and changes up and down gear on command! Comes in at night. Doesn't mind fly spray or fly mask. Excellent with farrier for his regular trims and was fine with the vet putting the dentistry gag in his mouth which was a first time for him. A really nice person. So he might do as a companion to the young Arab. Loaning is a bit of a worry - I don't trust people not to sell him/or worse. Because I'm such a picky "owner" - I'd probably be for ever criticising their management of him! Anyway, thanks so much for the support - I'll let you know how we get on at The First Show! I''l probably be carted out of the ring! |

if it was all right with you (and the moderators!) I could put a link to here on a great NH site - all very good owners and spreading the word might help?
Ditto the others on the judging front; none of us can and you have to look at the situation from all sides.
good luck |

I think Pat's idea sounds just great and could be the way forward for you, she is very experienced and obviously knows the owners of the colt - I would definitely speak to her, I am sure you will be able to sort things out.

Beware of offering him without payment to a "home for life" - I have heard of two horses in the past 12 months or so that have been offered a permanent home, been gifted to the person taking them then sold very shortly afterwards. Your better bet would be to loan him out - try advertising on Project Horses for loan, you might find a genuine home on there who would have him on permanent loan and bring him on nicely. He'd make a nice companion for a couple of years until he's ready to start work, and I often hear of people after companions for single horses (sadly we're too far from you but I'll as around). |

Hi folks! Small light at end of tunnel! The lovely yard I've got Welshy at said she could halve my 7day livery costs for the next four months; he can go out in her paddocks with a pony he knows quite well (they've been out together before) and she will bring him in am and pm to feed him, check him over, do feet and put on/take off fly mask and add more fly spray! If it gets very hot, she'll bring them both in so they can have a kip in the stables in the day (although there is quite a lot of shade in all her paddocks) and go back out at night. So -that is a saving already. Pony got 10th place out of a very big,(36) strong class of Large M&M's of all ages and types, plus professional producers, several of whom we beat! He behaved perfectly - it was a huge show, very busy - five rings going at once etc. We'd been told it was a little village show! He travelled perfectly, stayed on the box when his Arab companion (not mine) who is a 21 yr old son of Carmargue went and got a 2nd in his class and generally behaved like a veteran. Really pleased with him. Re TFA, I'm going to stop his calmer and joint additives, cos they are both in his feed supplement. That will save £38+ a month. Also, school and lunge him myself rather than paying my lovely instructor to do it each week. She is wonderful, but he will have to put up with my efforts again. (It's just she is sooo good, and he has so benefited from her work - fab shape and topline etc) May have found a way through financial black hole - but it will take some time to work out. Meanwhile - scramble on from day to day. Really dont want to give up on either of them cos they have both done so well. Welshy is now unrecognisable - he looks like a mini black Friesan! Thanks for all the continued much valued support. Lotsa love from me, Welsy and TFA. |

Ooh i'm in North Kent too - was it Holt Farm you went to yesterday?
I'm glad you seem to have managed to sort thing out, but if you get stuck in the future, let me know as you could always loan out to stay at your yard - i.e. they pay for everything but you get to see him everyday and check he is being cared for etc. There are a couple of good local RCs who advertise for free and always know of people looking to loan or just help out! |

Thanks everybody - yes, Pasha, it was Holt Farm! Where you there in the Ridden Arabs, Pure breds and Anglo's? Did you see Son of Camargue? Fab. old white Arab, Al Khalili (I think) is reg name. And yes, I've been buying him feed as well cos he was so thin and gloomy when I met him in Feb. He's on the same yard as Welsh Pony. Love to meet up with you - how's Pasha getting on? And your new Arab? Do make contact - there is a dearth of Arabian Anoraks around to natter breed lines and types with. And you could be introduced to the Fab Fat Arab - very grand old Crabbet lines, and cos he's old, they are really close up to him, if you see what I mean. Anyway, look forward to hearing from you. Love Zooscat n Co. |
