Damn, I missed it. I heard about a horse possibly committing suicide. Can't remember the circumstances, but believe it had lost its field companion or something. Apparently, the field edged a pond. The horse walked in calmly, kept walking and before anyone could do anything had drowned. To onlooker, it was all very calm and deliberate and no-one could believe it. There didn't seem to be any other reason.

How strange! That certainly indicates the level of emotions the feel and how good they are at picking up on moods. |

I watched last part (after waking up) and they talked to a knacker man who said he knew a horse that had committed suicide by bashing his head on wall, he had a terminal illness, and yes they are the only animals to commit suicide, how sad. It will be repeated all week, I'm sure. Very interesting, although have to say I became a little irritated when girl was kicked, I thought she would at least have a broken leg for all the fuss she made! |

I watched it, thought some of it was very good, but other bits were just stupid...I agree about when she got kicked, I thought she must have broken something too! If she was really as scared of horses as she said I think she did do very well though to get as far as she did especially getting the lead horse to follow her into the lorry, I wish I could load Tara like that!! |

The only bit I enjoyed was the guy making friends and the fact I learnt about the horses committing suicide. The girl I couldn't stand... the fact that she was on another reality TV programme a few years back just makes me think she didn't have an interest she just wanted another opportunity to get on the telly... Sorry.. I just thought it was such a good experience that was wasted on her - and thought after the kick she went well OTT.. I have no sympathy!!
hehe.. can anyone tell I am having a mini life crisis!!
I prefered the guy.

Just seen it at Moominmamas No wonder the horses were wary of her after she was screaming like a banshee! As for the bloke even before Terry Nutkins said he thought he would struggle I sort of felt he'd be fine;he was so into it! She was not at all comfortable around them really considering having had horses in the family......But yes, very good loading! |

Agree with comments re the two people living as horses. The guy seemed to have a natural affinity with the horses. For those who missed it it will be shown again on Tuesday 28th April on BBC3 at 8.00p.m. |

Morning Moomin, I'd be surprised if he didn't have something more to do with horses after achieving all that. |

JMHO and I didn't see the programme, but I don't think horses are aware of the concept of death as a way out of pain/anguish.
Many horses kill themselves as a result of all sorts of things; panic being one. I think a horse with, say, a painful tumour, would bash it's head on a wall either because it is so traumatised by pain it doesn't know what else to do, or it is 'brain damaged' by said tumour.
The horse walking into the water cannot really be aware that it's about to drown itself can it?
A friends horse recently killed itself by tearing around a field and jumping a huge fence, it turned out to have a worm in it's brain - I don't think suicide, I just think it was tormented and 'lost the plot'.
I could be wrong - but wonderful as they are, horses are not as intelligent as other species of animal, so why just horses? |

Hmmmmm, maybe they not as intelligent as some but I've not seen many grand prix dressage rabbits!! I think they have a fantastic memory though and they seem to have a way of figuring things out,i.e, stepping on the hose pipe during washing as they know it cuts the water off! My lot understand the word "carrots" as when I'm calling them to get them to come in off the grass paddock they totally ignore me until I shout the C word....then they all gallop to me!! |

I liked the guy, he had never been near a horse before either..unlike the banshee who had ridden when she was younger... He was really gentle with them I thought.. I liked him a lot. I also wondered if the horses where the girl was had that type of work done with them with different people all the time? I know it takes my lot a fair bit longer before they trust people even using those types of techniques.
It saddened me to think that horses would commit suicide, I kind of hope that isn't the case... I guess we will never really know.. |

lol re' the C word Mittens - mine respond to the F word.
I totally agree with you that horses have fantastic memories but I just find it hard to accept that they can contemplate and plan their own death. That would be beyond anything they have learned (and so remember) but as Eunette says guess we'll never know.
p.s. your artwork is fab |
