Well it's gone a bit nuts here lately. Mares are coming into season.
I have caught some of my mares flirting with each other In particular one mare who is old enough to know better, is flirting rather outrageously with one of my youngsters, also a filly.
Do any of your mares do this?

Well....we had two heavily pregnant mares suddenly, flirting with each other......actually acting out Stallion and Mare roles.....can you picture the scene....lady with huge baby bump...mounting another lady with likewise big tummy!!!
This happened for a couple of days, then back to normal
We pondered that perhaps they were carrying colt foals...and maybe it was something to do with male hormones??? In the event, unfounded, as both mares later, produced filly foals within a week of each other.
Never witnessed this scene before or since, but at the time it was quite a hilarious spectacle

My filly flirts outrageously with a QH/TB cross who is very pretty, and whose owner keeps telling me that her horse doesn't get on that well with others so to be aware. However, the other horse will let Eba steal her hay and always runs up immediately if we go past. The other horse can get quite hormonal so didn't know if it was some kind of pheramones she gives off?

My shetland girls do this throughout the summer. Its always Minnie acting out the role of the stallion. She really acts and sounds like she is entire, including courting, rounding up with snaking head and not only mounting but thrusting!!!! |

You've all made me laugh. I've had mares in the past which have done this. My cob mare is an angel though, and never shows herself up like that. Indeed she's stabled with not 1 but 2 stallions and even they never seem to know when shes in season. Only time she has ever shown is when we've moved yards and she's been put with strange horses.

Interesting topic as my mare seems to attract all the others when they are in season.
Through the winter she was best friends with a little shetland (her shadow!), and VERY rarely grazed with any of the others. However, now that spring has sprung she can be found with whichever mare is in season at the time (regardless of whether she herself is in season or not), and they will be screaming for her when she is turned out first thing in the morning. What makes this even more odd is that at our previous yard she was really picked on by the other mares and a complete loner.
I wonder if she has slightly abnormal hormaones and they think she is a boy? Any ideas? |
