I just went up the field to check on the horses and found them munching though a mountain of grass cuttings I chucked them back over the garden from where they came. My fields are completely bordered on one side by houses so other than leafleting or putting up a big sign i dont know how i could let them know not to do it. I suppose they thought it would be nice for the horses.
Its such a worry! Michelle

Unfortunatly people who dont have horses don't understand that grass cuttings are not good for them. I would put a sign up explaining in non horse people terms why it is harmful to tip grass cuttings into the field. |

I would leaflet as well as a notice--- friendly, informative text explaining why it is dangerous for horses. It wouldn't cost much to run them off. Also, would it be possible to put an electric tape along the inside of the fence, well back from the gardens? Belt and braces approach I know, but people can be really dense sometimes--- it was really lucky you saw them eating it today and you don't want to risk it happening again when you aren't there. |

Definitely put leaflets round, and out huge notices up. When I rented a field not only did one of mine (pregnant at the time) come down with colic becuase someone chucked all their veg peelings from Christmas over the fence, but someone by the field thought it was OK if they lit a bonfire every couple of weeks They'd even leave their gate open so they could come and go more easily, and never mind the horses trying to escape. |

The funny thing is the people that did it had to climb their wall, squeeze through a barbed wire fence and then chuck them quite high to get them over my electric/sheep wire fence. So they werent just being lazy they actually wanted the horses to have them!
I am going to leaflet politely, i hate offending people but i'm sure if they new how dangerous it is they wont mind.

I think I would spend an evening going round to their houses and just explain what sort of damage it can do, as it sounds like they think they are giving the horses a nice treat and don't realise the damage they could cause |
