Hi folks,

My mum is in mourning today for her lurcher dog Oskar who had to be put down aged 16 after developing bad asthmatic attacks. He'd been Mum's constant companion since my Dad died six years ago and she is heartbroken.

I think my brother will be taking her to try to find a replacement (she's never been without a dog) at the weekend, but I know some people on AL have contacts with dog rescue centres, so any ideas would be very gratefully received.

There is no 'shopping list' - her dogs have always sort of 'found' her. Oskar came from a National Canine Defence League home; she'd never had a lurcher before, more terrier, Jack Russell types or GSDs. However she was totally smitten by Oskar and is a great fan of the breed now.

Thanks.

Roseanne

Shame you are so far away---I have a wonderful lurcher looking for a home at the moment. I'm sure you will find a nice dog locally---great that your mum is going to have another rescue

Thank you everyone. Heather what's it like? She likes the rather rough haired ones (cos Oskar was like that) but as I said, almost any dog could now be the one!

I have been looking out for Cazza's posts recently, as we have been waiting for this time for some while. I will PM her, but in the meantime, any other ideas would be welcome.

Will check dog pages! Thank you.

Lanabanana that lurcher is just lovely. I bet my Mum would have fallen for him but if I read correctly he's found his home?

Mum would be very touched by people's efforts to help (I shall tell her). Thanks everyone. Keep the ideas coming if there are any more leads.

I'm not too sure either reading the replies So I've asked if he has been rehomed yet.
There are some other lovely rough coated Lurchers on there too, but it was Teddy's lovely cuddly nature that I fell for

How about taking your mum to the local dog rehoming centre to see if she falls in-love with any dogs there?

Just spoken to Mum for the first time since Oskar died. We may be taking her to the Canine Defence League home in Kenilworth this afternoon... Here's hoping. I'll let you all know what happens.

An update - Mum didn't go to the NCDL today; she is still feeling a bit shellshocked, but has asked me to take her on Wednesday. I will show her Teddy though. I think he's just lovely!

Will also check out your link Akitamom. Thanks so much.

Thanks Cazza - got your PM and have been on the links. Great!

Mum and I are off to the dogs' home in 15 mins. I'll let you know what happens!

My brother rang the lady who has lovely Teddy (I just adore him!) and she's offered to bring him down to meet Mum, so if we don't find anything I live in hope that we may yet meet Teddy...

Just to say that I really feel for your mum, I'm sure the next dog is out there, waiting for her, and you will help your mum find him/her. Run free Oskar over Rainbow Bridge

Well the trip to Kenilworth was not successful. On Saturday they said they had 158 dogs, which must have been a bit of a fib, since today they only had 80 and they rehome about 150 a month (which is fantastic I think!).

There was nothing that appealed at all except the sweetest Norfolk Terrier who stood out among the kennels and kennels of bull terrier, rottweiler and labrador crosses, came very sweetly to the glass partition and we thought her very endearing. But many of the dogs there had history of biting people, including this sweet-looking little girl.

So it's back to square one. Mum was of the opinion you have to be in a dog's presence for it to choose you and you can't tell much from a picture, but I haven't given up on Teddy yet! We will check out the other two local dogs' homes - but watch this space.

Goldenmane, thanks for your sympathy. Mum drove over today and my sons hugged her and said how sorry they were; very dangerous - she still can't talk about Oscar for fear of weeping....

I feel the same Lanabanana! He's just lovely in the pictures. The difficulty is that the woman who is caring for him would have to drive a long way to bring him to see Mum and Mum wants to be quite honest, and free to say if there isn't a 'click' between them. We kids have said we'll pay the lady's expenses but it would be quite a commitment in time for her.

Hi Roseanne, I think she would understand if your Mum didn't feel he was the dog for her, after all they wouldn't want to rehome him with someone who wasn't entirely happy with him.

My brother and I think he would 'click' with her. She doesn't want to put the poor foster carer to the trouble of driving all that way from Yorkshire if there was a chance of her not falling for him. I am going to keep encouraging her.
