Hi, I've always gone down the showing route with my boy so far but was looking out of interest at this forum and wondered if it is something that can be done as well? My horse is fit and hacks a long way on weekends but I don't know the first thing about endurance, how do you get started and what do you have to do? I live in Bradford, West Yorkshire, my horse is a full bred Arab (russian) and I've never done any endurance at all, the nearest I came was almost buying a part bred with her silver spur? Don't know if theres any small starter events in my area? Or even if it is a bad idea to put him in for this if he's use to showing and still shows?? Thanks from an endurance novice

Hiya
You get started by putting up a post about endurance so you've already taken the first step LOL.
Sounds as though your horse would be fit enough to do a social/pleasure ride and that's where you need to start out and see if you and your horse enjoy it. You need to get in touch with the EGB West Riding Group, there's a couple of events happening in the area in the not to distant future. Best thing would be to have a look at the website and go from there. http://www.snaffle.demon.co.uk/WestRiding/
If you fancy coming to an event and seeing what happens, I and the rest of the West Riding Group will be at Ackworth Moor Top ride in Fitzwilliam, Wakefield on Sunday running one of our yearly rides so you could always come along and say hello -we're always glad to see new endurance people! |

Hi Kristin,
As Kerry is in your area, she's the one to help with local rides. My Dollar was a show horse when he was younger but became an Advanced 100 mile horse. I have Azeez Sadeeq 3 yrs colt, who up until this year was a show horse. I hope for great things for him in Endurance and I hope to show him at times too. Diane will probably tell you, you can combine Show and Endurance as she wins at both. Its just that the high milage horses are sometimes leaner than a show judge likes and have very defined muscles. If you can, go to a ride with or without your horse and see how much fun we have. You don't have to want to do high mileages, there's loads who just do pleasure rides and most clubs have end of year trophys for these riders. Most everyone starts with pleasure rides and then gets hooked. So be warned!!!!! Have a look on "Endurance GB" web site, most info is there. If you need anymore info or help just ask. There's always someone here to guide you in the right direction.
