Hi all
Has anybody every had thier horse break out in an allergic reaction to a deet based fly spray? I applied some last Thursday to Guinness's bottom along with some baby oil and now he has blisters on both side of the cheeks of his bum, I would be surprised if it was the Baby Oil but I have never used the Deet Fly Repellent before so?

Was it hot and sunny Beryl? It was beautifully sunny and warm in Marseilles last Thursday and Friday when I was there. It could be that the sun is reacting with the baby oil and burning.
I used Deet based stuff on my itchy Andalusian and had no trouble at all. It was a formula/make my son had used on his travels to the far east. |

Deet was recommended to me by the skin specialist at Liphook Equine Hospital - even for very allergic Dennis.
I used to apply baby oil to faces before going in the show ring until I realised it fried delicate skin in the sun which made the skin peel off. So I agree with Roseanne in that the cause is most likely the baby oil. |

Iused a fly repellant once on mine with Deet and it took the skin of them Cant remember the name of it but it was an Irish company that made it. Both were in a lot of pain and cost a bit of money in vet bills to put right aswell.
never ever again!!!

ekk hope he is ok, think it sounds like the oil, was that the only substance the deet was mixed with? |

Hi all
The Deet I used is a well know horse fly repellent product so not home made or anything, the baby oil went under his tail and just on the soft parts of his bottom to stop the horrid Mouche Plats getting a grip he has one big tail so I doubt if the sun could have caused it and I did not spray the Deet just put some on a sponge and applied to his bottom, one side looks like small pimple blisters the other very much larger lumps up to gobstopper size, they don't seem to itch at the moment but I have been washing with Hibiscrub and applying antiseptic cream, it's no joke if he's allergic to fly spray over here!!!!
