Hi all, just wondered if any of you have had your Gallbladder removed not the open method but Laporoscopically? I have had a Laporoscopy a few years ago for Endometriosis and found it really painful, as this Gallbladder is another abdominal surgery just wondering how bad it will be? How long before you were back on your feet and able to do things again?

I had mine out 3 wks ago....i was on my feet the next day....i suffer bad from sickness from the anashetic[sp] so could not go home till the next day but a lot can go home the same day.
The only thing i found bad for about a week was the not really being able to move in bed....you cannot lie on your side as it hurts and pulls....you can only lie on your back....i was shopping on the day i was let out...and am now back at work.
The pain of gallstones is awful so the slight uncomfort from the operation is nothing compared to the pain before. |

Thanks for that info' guys, very encouraging, I don't think I will be up and out the hospital the next day, when I had a Laporoscopy done before I was in a few days and that wasn't removing anything ha ha. Ahhh well, will see what happens. |

Hi Hope all goes well for you and you probably don't want to hear about my experience as not good but is complicated so may not be relevant i have gone into detail but when you get to the end it still points to a biliary problem. Having had recurrent fistula problems for 2 years diarrhoea and cramps for 6 months i went to my gp at the begin dec who then refered me to a colerectal surgeon who i saw the following week and who then did fistula surgery and a colonoscopy on the 18th dec under GA as he thought i may have crohns. I came out the same day after that as had works xmas party and convinced them i was in good hands as work with several RGN's!!! The cramps got worse over xmas and i saw the consultant on the 9th of jan all biopsies negative but had mega cramps so he ordered a ultrasound and found sludge in gall bladder and he did the second stage fistula op and laparoscopic gall bladder removal with on table cholangiogram on the 26th jan. I came round from the op ok and ate something and was promptly ill again and used 2 lots of pca medication overnight(morphine based) and when surgeon saw me next morning he told me i had to stay another day. I went home on the weds feeling ok but still had cramps. Saw the practice nurse on thurs who said i looked awful and was to see her and the gp monday am for blood tests and a check up. I got worse over the next couple of days and sat am i phoned the hospital and spoke to the staff nurse who said she would contact the surgeon as i couldn't eat anything without mega cramps. surgeon met me at the hospital at 4.30pm and i was on a drip and admitted again by 5pm. A ultrasound person was called in from home on the sunday am to do a ultrasound that showed nothing and the surgeon came to the hospital from home twice on the sunday to monitor me As I had insurance (thank god bill to date £12000) all this was done privately hence why the surgeon etc have to come to the hospital as it is only 36 beds with several surgeons doing their private work there. He arranged for a upper gi specialist to see me /do a ercp endoscopy on the monday as he suspected a stray stone was lodged in the bilairy system. The upper gi specialist refused to do a ercp straight off as it is high risk especially for young fit slim females!!! He suggested I have a ordinary Endoscopy and a MRCP MRI scan (which had to be done at another hospital) first. The lower GI surgeon was going to do the endoscopy on the Tues but got cancelled due to no theatre staff as we had mega snow. Then it was scheduled for the weds but got got postponed to the following monday as the other hospital offered us a MRCP MRI on the weds. on the monday I had the Endoscopy which was done by the upper gi surgeon as first surgeon now on holiday. All of this came back negative but i still had cramps and couldn't eat anything much and only if i took buscopan. It was decide that my cramps could be a functional gastrointestinal disorder so have been on various diets/tablets etc to see if they can relieve my symptoms. This hasn't worked i still have acute pain if i eat much at all I can't eat anything fatty at all and have been on a dairy free wheat free diet. I spoke to the consultant at 5.45pm today and after a long chat he decided it was now out of his league and I needed to see the upper GI consultant again. He said he would sort it for me, 10 mins later he called back and I see the upper GI consultant on mon pm. They are now thinking it may be something called Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction (which is often called post cholecystectomy syndrome) and I probably have type 3 which is the hardest to diagnose. (also opiates like morphine make it worse hence why i was so ill after the op as the more i pressed the pca the worse i made it) Basically this means that the muscles that control my bile flow are going into spasm and the pressure is too high in the ducts when I eat. as they are doing it intermitantly I have type 3 which means my liver enzymes etc are normal and I'm not getting jaundiced. The only way to confirm this is to do the risky ercp with sphincter of oddi manometry and cut the sphincter if necessary and this is highest risk ercp they can do and I'm in the high risk group of getting pancreatitis from it. I see him monday and will see what he suggests and what we do now as I'm reluctant to have the ERCP if I dont have to. I know this is long but wanted to say that sometimes taking the gall bladder out doesn't solve the problems. Throughout all of this my weight has dropped and i have now lost nearly 3 stone due to not being able to eat and I Forgot to also say that i'm a determined person and dont let any of this stop me doing things I rode again quietly after 2 weeks and went back to work after 2 weeks also. I also rode 81km on sunday on Connie as i was determined to do it but perhaps shouldnt off |

Hi danielle Have you got a date for your op yet? My consultant is still doing more tests as he doessn't know why i have had poor recovery from my gall bladder op i had a barium meal and follow through yesterday and it showed nothing so it still looks like its my bile ducts play up.

OMG Kirsty! Have just read through your reply, only just come back on as been ill last few days. Your op sounds truly dreadful and I feel so sorry for you to have had to go through all of that, I really hope there will be some light at the end of the tunnel for you soon. My saga continues!! Was meant to see consuktant tomorrow about it all, he has now cancelled and I have to go next week on Thursday and see a colleague of his, this I object to as his colleague won't be doing the op, cancelling consultant would be doing the op as he is the surgeon, I seem to just be ebing pushed back each time and cancelled again and again and this appt was just to talk about it etc! I do have a life outside of these appointments! |

Mine was cancelled 3 times...then they rang me on a thursday and asked me to come on the following monday.
The only thing they did not tell me or the doctor in my notes was that they put in a stitch in my belly button....did not know it was there and neither did the nurse who changed my dressings and checked my wounds over...4 wks later my belly button was infected and the wound still not properly closed....stitch now out and getting better now. |

Hi Danielle sorry to hear they keep cancelling it/altering the consultant you see and I do hope you get a date/news soon I was so lucky my job comes with insurance as was told by my consultant his nhs waiting time is 4 months. Thanks for your concern I'm sure they will get me sorted soon and I will be able to then eat properly. The upper Gi bloke has got me worried though as said that they get concerned when someone has lost more than 10% of there body weight in 6 months and thats why they are concerned about me even though my bmi is ok. when i came home i worked out i had lost 20% in 3 months no wonder he offered me an urgent nhs barium meal if i wanted to not use the insurance. I have just been weighed today and lost another kg this week!! Akitamom could your stitch of been a disolvable one that didnt dissolve as they used disolvable ones on me and i rejected one and had what you had (in fact i had a copy of the consultants letter to gp and it said what type of material the stitches were etc). i also rejected the stitches when i broke my ankle and got an infection Kirsty Kirsty |
