Pharlap by far the bestest film. Then you have the National and International Velvet films, and more recently... Racing Stripes (okay, it's a zebra!) |

Gerri think your talking about Hidalgo. Mine are Hidalgo and Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.
The amazing book War Horse is being made into a film, no doubt that will become a much loved tear jerker, if they keep it close to the book!

Spirit - Stallion of the Cimmaron..... OK it is animated so not a real horse but it still makes me cry, and lovely Bryan Adams soundtrack that would make a good dressage to music tape me thinks.

Am I showing my age if I mention Champions, about Bob Champion and Aldaniti who won the Grand National in 1981? There was loads of publicity before the race because Bob had beaten testicular cancer and got racing fit against all the odds and Aldaniti had come back from a tendon injury against all the odds. My mother was suffering from cancer (since Dec 1978) and it gave us real hope that if Bob could do it she could too (recover from cancer, not necessarily ride in the National!!!!) Sadly it was not to be and she died on 27/4/81 at the age of 58. I have watched the film loads of times and even the theme music can bring a tear. I am 58 next birthday and it looms as a hurdle (or even a Becher's Brook) in my mind that I have to clear. Also The Black Stallion and Into the West. Least favourite - Black Beauty - far too distressing. Can't think how I read it as a kid. |

Yes Phar Lap is a real tear jerker but I also love King of the Wind which is about the Godolphin Arabian. Some top actors are in that inc Nigel Hawthorne, but it always makes me cry!! Leighxx |

Yes Phar Lap - Black Stallion films - My Friend Flicka - and Thunderhead son of Flicka. There was a Lovely grey Arabian in a film called Eagles Wing - with Martin Sheen. When Martin Sheen got him - his riding was awful - so I was glad when the Indian warrior got him and rode off into the distance. - Lovely little horse. |

Yes The Black Stallion films and Champions were the best. I know it wasn't a film but does anyone remember White Horses that used to be on tv with terrible voice overs? and then there was The Horse in the House as well? |

Summarised from Wikipedia: Phar Lap was a champion racehorse who became a much loved national icon in Australia where he was trained and raced, and in New Zealand where he was foaled. At the time of his death in 1932, Phar Lap was the third highest stake-winner in the world.
In the four years of his racing career, Phar Lap won 37 of 51 races he entered, including the Melbourne Cup in 1930 with 9st 12lb (61.5kg). In that year and 1931, he won 14 races in a row. From his win as a three-year-old in the VRC St. Leger Stakes until his final race in Mexico, Phar Lap won 32 of 35 races.
For his final race in 1932, Phar Lap's owner shipped him by boat to Agua Caliente Racetrack near Tijuana, Mexico, to compete in the Agua Caliente Handicap, which was offering the largest purse ever raced for in North America. Phar Lap won in track-record time.
He died in 1932 and there is STILL ongoing controversy surrounding his death, in as late as 2006 Australian scientists said it was almost certain Phar Lap was poisoned with a large single dose of arsenic in the hours before he died, perhaps supporting the theory that Phar Lap was killed on the orders of U.S. gangsters, who feared the Melbourne-Cup-winning champion would inflict big losses on their illegal bookmakers.

Ok heres one nobodys mentioned (ive only seen it once myself, but it was excellent)
I cant remember if was "A Horse Called Sylvester" or just "Sylvester" its a story about a young girl 18 (ish) trying to bring up her two younger brothers (lost both parents in a tragic accident I think)
Anyway, she works on a ranch and her usual mount was a spotty mustang type - but she see's a big rangy flea-bitten grey that's been brought in either off the range or off a lorry (cant quiet remember) anyway she break/trains this horse to win the equivalent of our "Badminton" 3 day event - it was a nice film. I always remember she had terrible trouble getting him to jump water! came a cropper several times from what I remember.
Can anyone else remember this film?

years ago there was a film on t.v about a young boy who 'tames' a wild little grey pony, rides it everywhere causing havoc through the town, he would shake its bridle and he would go to the boy... somehow the pony gets out to the wilds again and a posh girl who was in a wheelchair picks him out from a group for him to be her driving pony... some battle ensues whether he is the boys or the girls pony and it is decided by pony in a ring, girl calling him (bow I think? :P )and boy shaking his bridle, he goes to the boy but then I think they come to some sort of mutual thing so the disabled girl still gets to go driving... gawd knows what that was called but it was quite a sweet film, pretty old but i have no clue as to what it would be called, sorry off geekbox now |
