I've always used leather girths that are elasticated on one side, however, I was recently told I should either use a girth that is non elasticated or elasticated on both sides, something to do with it affecting the balance of the saddle and hence also affecting the horses back? Has anyone else heard this and if this is the case, what type of girth is the best to use?
Yep, my saddler made me aware of this a few year ago and recommended the Wintec Chafeless girth. I've been using these girths ever since, and can highly recommend them!
Wintec girths get the thumbs up from me - I use both the normal and the dressage versions. The only leather girth I use now is the Strada dressage girth, which like the Strada saddles I have, it has heat reactive memory foam on the side nearest to the horse that molds to the horses shape and allows optimum flexibility - lovely stuff!
I had also heard (but "third hand") that it is not advisable to use a girth with elastic on one end only. I have to say that I have no experience of elasticated girths of any kind as I use an Aerborn Humane girth.....but apparently?? these are not humane?? All I know is that my horse is more than happy with it (other than the initial "grumping" when the girth is first loosely done up).
