I am thinking of breeding my 14 year old mare, who is 14.2hhs to a 16hhs high stallion. She had had three foals in the past, when she was younger, without any problems. We are breeding the foal to be a future ridden horse for my daughter, who is tall and I just wondered if breeding to a bigger stallion increases the likely hood of a bigger foal?

There is a good possibility that the foal will be bigger than mum when mature, it just depends on who's gene's it picks up! Good luck! |

Hi, It is likely that you will get a bigger foal than mum, but it doesnt always happen that way. I have a coloured first ridden pony who's mother was a pure Shetland (obviously only measured in inches) and the father was a Hannovarian/Coloured cob colt (15.2hh) who got in the field with the mare and covered her, the resulting foal was our pony and she never got any bigger than 11.1hh! Also one of my pure bred mares is 15.2hh, both her Sire and Dam were no bigger than 14.2hh, yet her full sister is only 14.2hh aswell. The world works in mysterious ways! |

That's like the story of the Jack Russell who took a greyhound on a hot date because his friends put him up to it. (Sorry!) |

Depends both on the genes and nutrition, but you should get a couple of inches. |

Thanks for your replies,a couple of inches would be great Thats all we need really, the mare is the yellow dun first picture below, she is arab/highland cross,so we are looking at arab stallions, would love a palomino or buckskin foal. |

I was told many years ago but don't know how true it is that a mare will only produce a foal that is the size that is safe for her????? if you get my drift apparently thats where nature kicks in, as I say I am not saying that this is the case but just something I was told many years ago and that was just said to be "normally" |

I agree with Gerri, The size of the foal would depend on the space in the womb that allows for development. In theory, going to a taller stallion it should give you an extra couple of inches at maturity (just don't expect a girraffe?) Having said that, your mare has had foals before, so would'nt be as limited in development space as a maiden. I have an old TB mare that has always produced small foals (she's 15.3hh and nomatter what size stallion she goes to (from 16.1hh TB's to 16.3hh WB's... damn thing still comes out small!)Hum... T x |

Same here.......a Clients 15.2hh mare, whatever size of stallion, be it a 13hh pony or a Thoroughbred, her foals always mature at 15hh and she has had fourteen offspring

Hi Babs,
I think I had the exception to the rule from that mare! Foal ended up 15.2hh, but it was by Flight who was known to throw 17hh to 15.3hh mare. He was only 15.11/2hh but had big blood back on his TB lines. Also managed to get the first filly after quite a lot of colts (can't remember how many but I'm sure you'll know)

Hi Jean, yes, her last three foalings, two fillies and a colt. With Flight`s and Ottergale`s fillies, making four, the others all colts!!
She is such a sweet mare, very much like our lovely Karitzi, her mum. Have promised to take Karitzi back to the Nationals again, when she is thirty, (fingers crossed)
