The neighbouring field has a footpath which runs along the boundry between my field and theirs. I own the boundry hedge. I trim my side of the hedge and the top of the hedge. The hedge on their side is untrimmed and is impeding progress for walkers along the footpath. Is it my responsibility to trimthe hedge on teir side? or is it theirs?
Hi Joto, we have a foot path running next to one of our fields. It is kept clear by the council footpath agency. I am not sure how it works where you live but you could ask your local council about it ?
Hi, I live in Shropshire. I rang the council a short while ago and am waiting for them to ring me back. I know if hedges overgrow the roads the council trims them then sends the land owner a bill. its this situation i'm trying to avoid. I asked the same question on H&H and the answer seems to be its my responsibility even on the other side, but am not sure so am awaiting reply from council. we get on fine with our neighbour and she would let us into her field to trim the hedge, but I wonder, what would happen if the owner said No? could be quite a problem for some I expect.
when we had this problem in surrey after a long court case it was decided that whoever owned the subsoil that the hedgerow was planted in was responsible for maintaining the hedge. hopethat this helps!!
Here in Suffolk the council is responsible for trimming the hedges on the footpath where there are different owners either side of the footpath; where one person owns the land both sides that person is responsible. I know because I have a footpath along two sides of my field. The land the other side of the path belongs to my friend at the side so I don't have to cut the hedges (no hedge there anyway), the land the other side of the footpath at the bottom of my field belongs to me so I have to pay to have the hedge cut. Sod's law stated that the hedge would be on that end of the field!!!
Hi everyone and thanks for the replies. I rang the council to check and as I own the hedge its up to me to trim it both sides and top . Problem solved.
