I am sure most of you who have horses on Pergolide are aware of this, but just in case (as vet's aren't forthcoming with the information):

100 x 1mg Pergolide from vet = £105.00 + £15.75 VAT

100 x 1mg Pergolide from Waitrose Pharmacy = £42.81

if you don't already - get a prescription from your vet and buy your Pergolide at your local pharmacy - I will save £77.94!!!

Sxx

P.S. The pharmacy man was also very interested in why my horse was having it etc and couldn't be more helpful!!

Delyth, yes it is for Cushings and I've been using it 8 weeks so far (haven't seen any improvement from it - bloods still the same, so money down the drain really BUT vet is convinced it'll do something eventually.. hmmm)

Sarah (aka Sazzle) - have a look on www.metabolichorse.co.uk as Jackie does 'safe' joint supplements for horses with Cushings/Laminitis and think she does pure MSM as well

Guess apart from that you could have a look and see how 'pure' the NAF MSM is? Probably more readily available!

I WISH we had Petplan!! Sadly they brought in the veteran policy just after Pasha turned 20 so we just missed it!! Keeping my fingers crossed for some sort of bonus at the end of Feb to help pay for it all x

Isn't it expensive from the vets because, apart from their markup, they aren't allowed to use generic drugs?

The chemist in Sainsburys tried to tell me generic pergolide wasn't available He didn't believe me when I said I'd got it from somewhere else before so if I ever need it again I'll have to take the box in with me as proof!

You can get it as low as £30 per 100 if you shop around, too, but even £42 isn't too bad. Certainly better than the £150+ a month it would have cost me to treat my first horse with Cushings.

perhaps the chemist ment that their wasn't a horse equivalent ??

It's only available as a person drug which is why the vets are expensive as they have to buy it in.... NOT THAT EXPENSIVE THOUGH!

My vet charges £50.00 for 100, chemist £35.00 foe the same

No, the guy in the Sainsburys chemist was adamant that there was no generic one available! It was just as well I knew better - in the end I got it from the chemist up the road from work most of the time.

Your vet's charge for it is pretty good, wish they all were like that!

I know, he's really good with the prices for me.

I think I['ll end up getting it from him anyway from now on as vets can now legally charge for prescriptions so it makes it about the same price as the prescription is £12.50 ( which I DO think is a bit steep )
