Thanks Karon Jackie has got back to me and confirmed to stop the mix! She suggested Top Spec Anti Lam or even the Comprehensive Feed Balancer but I think i'm just going to stick to the Safe and Sound!! Once he's better and back in work I might consider the Top Spec if he needs more energy, but by then it'll be Spring anyway so I doubt he'll need any more than the Safe and Sound!! Beginning to realise, less is definately more!!
One thing she did say that was surprising is to stop the joint supplement immediately - apparently glucosamine is BAD!!! Going to get the joint supplement from her website which doesn't have glucosamine in!
She also said to stop the garlic which we've done immediately too as apparently it destroys the bacteria in the gut? All new to me!!
She suggested a few other supplements too so i'll order them from her! Fingers crossed he starts to get better soon - he wasn't hobbling at all yesterday so that's good, although today I couldn't get him out at all as we're snowed in
Thank you for all of your help and kind wishes xxx |

Ah, I missed that you'd got him on Glucosamine - Jackie advised me to stop that with mine, too, so I used Cortaflex which I think is safe. This was before she had her shop though, otherwise I'd have boguht a supplement from her. I did know about garlic, although so few people seem to.
Glucosamine contains glucose I think, which is a definite no for a horse with Cushings or insulin resistance.
I did have some improvement with ALA and rosehips with Khafif, before she was diagnosed with Cushings, and I kept up the rosehips most of the time with her. If nothing else she seemed to like them |

Her exact words were "Flexadin I believe contains glucosamine which is enough to cause laminitis in some cases, or to prevent recovery in others" so BAD BAD BAD!! Why don't they put warnings on? AND why don't the vets know this? It is plastered everwhere that Glucosamine is GOOD for arthritis!! No mention of Lami!!
She also said I should put him on magnesium and chromium immediately so i'm off to order those from her website now.... it's all such a minefield!! |

Thanks Lauren - he was actually in a very good mood at 6am this morning - he's enjoying all the company of his friends as they are all snowed in!! I did manage to clear around his stable so he could stand outside whilst i did his jobs which he likes!!
Once the snow goes we can get back to little walks and picking at grass as it seems to be good for his feet (maybe a circulation thing) and definately his mental health (and mine) |

Sarah - Roger from Trinity does a FAB magnesium supplement (better than Jackie's in my opinion and I've tried both) called MagFluid. It's helped Shah no end and it's supposedly very good for those with cushing like symptoms.
I didn't know about glucosamine or garlic so that's really useful to learn!!
Agree about rosehip, again something that has helped Shah a lot this winter.
Karon - what is ALA? |

Thanks - i'm feeling a bit 'blinded by science' at the moment and seeing as Jackie only lives 1/2 mile from me I was going to pop in and pick up the bits and bobs I need.... we'll give these a go and see what happens x |

So glad you're making progress, Pasha is very lucky to have someone who takes the time to really get the bottom of a problem.
Hope all goes great from here on in and if you need any more info from IVIS you know where I am - I'll try to be a bit quicker next time

ALA is Alpha Lipoic Acid and I can't for the life of me remember what it does now!
You're lucky to get a vet who even knows anything about Cushings (or is it just that my experiences are particularly bad?) so I'm not surprised he didn't know about Glucosamine. With my first horse, Khafif's mother, I couldn't get my vet to agree that she had Cushings at all and I had to get a second opinion with Khafif. Having your vet on side makes so much difference.
It's hard to know what to do sometimes, and I definitely agree about the blinded by science bit I did find that mooching around quietly helped Khafif no end when she was improving, as the bit of increased circulation made her more comfortable. My vet would have had kittens if I'd told him she was having a wander though.
Good luck, hope he carries on improving |

hey guys! really , really chuffed you are making progress thats good news - really interesting about the supplements - i dont feed it but have been advised to give MSM by my vet for stiffness - glad pasha likes the safe and sound! nashy loves it i think its all the 'chewy bits' and it does smell very appetising too!
with regards to the tablet he doesnt even notice it in the feed its always gone but if we have fussy moments i will use apple juice ( but not too much as worried about sugar content) or the dried mint you can buy -
it seems to do the trick anyway so glad you can take him out for walks now too !
they really seem to improve once you can walk them out i used to put nashy in the school as he started to improve to mooch about to stretch his legs - it helps get things moving and gradually get that muscle tone back! after 2 weeks of that ,i turned him out in a fenced off area in the paddock as he couldnt trot well and i didnt want him going balmy with the other boys! he's out with all of them now and its hard to belive in november i wasnt sure we were going to make it ..
shame about the stable thing , we are on DIY too so i know its a juggling act when you work long hours oh , i am just so pleased for you ! well done xx |

Thanks Sarah - did Nashy go for a stroll before he was 100% sound? I only ask as Pasha is still 'lame' but improves with a little stroll - i'm wondering if NOT walking him will hinder his progress?- I can walk him in the school (soft surface) although I daren't let him loose - he does a very good 'levade' and 'rodeo' on the end of the leadrope, although he is very careful not to pull me or tread on my feet Bless him! |

Thanks Emma x Pasha is very appreciative He shows it by giving me love bites Little Angel took a big chuck out of my arm last week!! These 'episodes' are few and far between though and I have to forgive him - it's miserable watching all the other ponies going out to play! Poor little love!! Really hoping after the snow has gone when we can get him out and about a little bit he'll improve |
