Very, very friendly, always trying to get near us, finding a good spot on a lap, craving every bit of attention he could get. I really loved him, and I actually nursed him for his 3 months, hand feeding him, giving fluids and medication, so it was even worse when eventually we realized that we needed to let him go.
I have a reasonably large garden and where I live is very quiet, so they usually roamed around here freely. That said, I still have two female cats, but they have been spayed, so no more kittens, but must say that I kinda miss kittens, the female cats used to have two litters per year.

It's also very annoying when you can't let them out. Mine were used to roam around since they were kittens (they were born here), so it was specially hard to keep them at home, they would create such a raucus that eventually we had to let them out. I also had problems with a neighbour, and had to keep one of the others at home, almost all the time. Very distressing, specially considering the threats made to the cat, if he caught him. Nasty .

I found Dark Lord rather amusing i have to say. i have no idea why, but whenever i looked at him/it i giggled! These are the sad facts of being owned by felines. I have had 2 cats that wandered out one evening. never to return. i remember one really vividly, he turned and looked at me as he wandered off into the dusk, and that was that! I kept the other 2 in for a while, until i decided i couldn't do it anymore, they were unhappy, and they let me know in no uncertain terms they weren't content with the situation (cue peeing on curtains and pooing in the hallway, god bless em!). i work in an emergency clinic and see the results of cat vs car on a regular basis . Every time i do i hope my cats are inside putting hairs on the bed or sitting on the work surface, rather than out gallivanting! Sancho was super cute. he's got a glint in his eye too

Hi Ros,
The Dark Lord meant to be amusing, but it was not for everyone. We had some requests to let it go, some public, others private, so gone he went. That also allowed me to show Sancho to everyone .
You're so right about felines. When I moved to where I live now, I tried to be careful enough to pick a place that looked safe, cause I had already lost too many cats to cars. In 5 years, still lost two, even in a much quiter place. I considered going to study to be a vet, when the decision to choose a career had to be done. I ended up not doing it, even though I've treated all my pets since I was a kid. I don't think I could do what you do, love cats and dogs and all animals too much to be able to see them in the situations I'm sure you see them.
Take care . |

not a vet, a nurse . Yes, you're right, it isn't pleasant sometimes (though often it's the owners rather than the pets or their ailments that make it unpleasant!). i work in a pdsa building and we see out of hours pdsa cases and strays too. neglect and abject cruelty cases are exceptionally upsetting. I feel though, that the day it doesn't matter any more and i'm cold and clinical enough to treat a patient and not form some, even brief, emotional bond, is the day i give up. Obviously there's a middle ground between being cold and clinical and bleating your eyes out every time you deal with a sick animal. Vets aren't immune to it either (or the good ones anyway). I can remember at least 3 pts situations where the vet, myself AND the client have stood over the peacefully passed on animal, and shed a few tears. I remember a few more still where we have come out of the consulting room and the vet and myself had to have a hug and shed a few tears . Ros |

Hi Ros,
Yes, I saw you were a nurse, from your profile . I've been lucky to find some good vets. The one that treated Sancho came to my home everyday during the first 3 weeks of his treatment (then I started giving him the fluids he needed and she just started coming once a week or so), and she became very attached to him too. When the time came, she was almost as much affected by it as I was, so I can understand what you wrote. I guess when you love animals, it's hard to contain your emotions in situations such as these.
