Claire and I were putting our yearling colt out into the field yesterday through as you would expect a very muddy gateway. The gateway is protected by a half circle of posts and tape to protect the gateway once in. My job was pretty simple just hold the gate open and shut behind not exactly rocket science you would think!! Gate opened colt in shut gate. Colt turns and knocks plastice post which flew like a jet propelled dart straight into my face and down the inside of my kneck. My reaction was to grab the plastic and yank out! Poor Claire colt in one hand and a mother with a fencing post impaled. I was given a brandy (nice) cleaned up and off to hospital to see if a stitch was necessary and a tetnanus. Apart from a swelling neck I felt ok. My goodness what treatment from the NHS I was rushed through, and it was explained to me the main artery to the brain was in that area and I was prepared for major surgery. Within an hour I resembled a pin cushion as they tried to extract blood, eventually suceeding in the groin..ouch! Apart from those needles there was the tetanus and a blood thinner to avoid DVT and then a needle to put dye in the system. I then had a CT scan. This showed the spike went through the face hit the jaw bone travelled down and hit the muscle one millimeter from the artery. Boy thats a bit close. Anyway to avoid boring you all I was nil by mouth stuffed with a variety of pain killers and anti-biotics and watched all night. Pleased to say am still here, very lucky, very well just looks like I have mumps!! Thank you Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital you were fantastic. Viv

Do hope you recover soon. My old arab had a dreadull time a couple of years ago. He bumped into a plastic post which shattered and went straight through his eye. To cut a long story short he now is blind in one eye but still enjoying being ridden and jumping. The only thing that kept him going with the pain was a big square of juicy haylage until the vet arrived. I have found a better alternative to plastic posts and I am using thick white electric tape with tree stakes. They are the same height as the electric posts once in the ground and it is safer and looks great as really visable ( cost the same as plastic posts). |

Viv, pleased to hear that you are ok. My God that could have been a terrible accident. ( Even worse , ......it could have been the colt, only joking). Look after yourself and DO take it easy while you recover. Has Claire recovered from the shock? Take care Lesley, Norleen and Glen. |

My god, you had a near miss with that one, somebody has a guardian angel.
We are resigned to the fact if its going to happen it will despite your best efforts. We have been replacing the temp posts, electric, with round wooden fence stakes, a couple decided to have a spat over the fence, we presume she reared up / one kicked at and smashed the post, the result was a gash at the back of the knee joint with bone visible.
Vet did a terrific job, she made a complete recovery and is sound.

Oh Viv, that's so scary for all of you.
Take it easy and make sure you rest properly. Love to you all (Claire is probably going to suffer shock once she realises you're safe)
Thinking of you xx |

Oh Claire what are you like..... Would have saved you a fortune keeping the crows away...
I would have left her there, and just fed her the odd crumb or too... (just joking Viv) Glad that you are ok...
Must have been a horrid shock for you all.

That's frightening and a massive lesson to us all! Was it a normal size post? I have a couple that are thin spikes at the end, but the vast majority look far too thick to penetrate the face or neck. That was a very close thing for you, I'm so glad you're OK, thanks to the medics!
Hope you recover soon. |

OMG that must of been so scary!!! i have had something simalar with a colt of mine that was being weaned at a friends place, she had those metal pigtail posts with electric wire through running on the inner side of her post and rail fence, well to cut a long story he galloped up to the fence and failed to put enough brakes on which meant he slid into the wire! he kicked out at the shock which pulled one of the posts out which swung round on the wire and clonked him on his leg!!!! he was so lame with a cut and a huge swelling, i had to take him to get an ex-ray as i feared the worse, luckily he was only badly bruised. I think because the ground is so wet all the time we will hear more and more of these freak accidents, i decided to buy wooden stakes in the end and only use the plastic in the summer.
Here`s wishing you a speedy recovery and thankgod it was not more serious.xxxxxxxxx |

OMG! What a scary incident! I'll be paranoid now about the posts! Hope you feeling better soon and just glad you will mend sooner rather than later! Good job you went to hospital- I'm terrible and would only ever go by force- I think I might reconsider after hearing your lucky escape!
Get well soon.x |

not to hijack this thread and i do hope you get better soon.
but its so easy to get complacent
A lady at my yard yesterday got kicked in the face. broken jaw in 4 places. i am told all sorts of cuts and lacerations. she was operated on yesterday and am told she is doing ok. She wasn't particularly doing anything wrong. just asked her horse to move over whilst tied up and wham.............
We all need to be careful at all times. so easy to take your own for granted.
Hope you are not in too much pain Giggsy but i know you are. take care of yourself. |
