Hi, I'm new, so a bit nervous of joining in but when the words Liver and unwell come up, I just have to, and I aplogise in advance if I'm saying what you already know. I notice that you are giving Milk Thistle for the Liver. I went thru 3 months of living hell with a Liver problem (different and allot more serious cause than worms); it was very bad, and caused lots of other problems. My vet practice at the time were sending out different vets to look at her and they all said something different, but mostly that she would die, and they all suggested different treatment. I used Fee for my moral support during this time, I must have driven her mad. I changed vets. The new vet was brilliant. He treated the worst symptom directly (which had gone on for 3 months), it cleared up in 10 days. And he treated the Liver. I believe the most effective thing was Vit B12, he injected her, said I would see an improvement in 7 to 10 days. Told me to ride her at walk gently for 1 hour a day. On day 5, after the injection, we were at the entrance to a path accross a big field, as usual during her ill heath, I was just holding the buckle, she turned her head slightly and looked at me with a big arab eye, clamped her teeth down on the bit and took off like a missile. So feeling very much better !!! She continues to improve daily, especially with the supplement. I know your horse seems to be on just about everything, but, for the Liver, I would highly recommend the Vit B12 injection. And the supplement. It is called Equisip-I. It describes that it is for: horses following illness and worm infestation. Is seems to have allot of Vit B12. My pony has improved so much since the injection and going on the supplement that it very clearly works. Again, apologies if I'm telling you what you know, but having read every document ever written on the subject of Equine Hepatic disorders ..... :) I do so hope your mare gets better soon. |

Hope she's feeling better now Ros - keep us updated!
As another one with a horse with a 'mystery illness' I can fully sympathise. Is it just us coming to the forums more openly these days or are more horses ill with funny symptoms than before |

Well, she's still here. This morning she looked a little better, legs a little less swollen and a little brighter. I called the vet who gave me her mobile phone number (bloody hell, it must be serious!) and said she wasn't on call at the weekend, but to call her if she went down hill again. She'll come back tuesday to repeat the bloods and fecal sample if she's all well. I checked her again a little later and took her rug off for a few hours as it was nice and warm. Although she isn't exactly skinny, she has lost quite a bit of weight, and her coat is appalling, really scurfy and dull . Although later she ate her tea, she looked miserable again and just stood in the field with her head hanging where she'd finished her tea, whilst the baby and my other 2 year old did the wall of death round the field . The thing is, even if she is getting better, this isn't going to clear up over night. I know that, but i so want her to be ok. I feel exhausted today, and keep getting all emotional about her. Tricia, thank you so much for your advice. I didn't know about vitamin b12, but now i think of it whenever we have animals with hepatitis or liver failure at work, we always give them b vits (i can give plenty of advice to other people about their animals, but when it comes to my own i can't think straight!). I'll get some of the suppliment. i've also ordered her some ecinacea (sp) for her immune system. Poor girl. Mind you, i always offer it to her first. I figure if she needs it, she'll eat it if it's herbal and self medicate. Thanks again Ros

Magnetic boots on her front legs would help the circulation and maybe get her back legs down---has worked for me.
I hope she gets better soon. |

Gerri, Ros, Thank you so much. And forgive me for sounding like a Vit B12 Injection salesman; its just that it was my miracle. (Although I wouldn't give my ill one anything, even a supplement, without first checking with my vet).
Ros, I so so so hope Ruby gets better soon.

Didn't eat her breakfast this morning, but seemed much better in herself. Chomped through a load of hay and walked the full length of the field this morning for the first time in about a week without stopping half way for a breather! Fine and eating all day, and ate her tea, though a little slower than usual. Called the vet who said if she doesn't pick up he'll come out and give her another steroid injection tomorrow. her legs have reduced in size considerably, and she's definatly more active. One step forward, 2 steps back Ros |

The vet came out again this afternoon to do more bloods. This morning she wolfed her breakfast and chomped her way through a ton of hay, then tried to steal missy's. For the first time this morning she actually looked herself again. No more mooning around looking sorrowful. Her coat looked brighter, her eyes had a shine to them and her belly looked rounded again . I couldn't believe it when i found 6 piles of cow pat again when i poo picked! The vet said that it's probably the antbiotics. If the bloods come back ok tomorrow and her white blood cells are normal, then take her off and bump up her probiotics. I have also got her on Hilton herbs immune stuff, loads of herbal goddies along with cider apple vinegar, to give her an extra boost (she loves it, licks it straight out of a bucket . I followed her around until she poo'd and it looked normal, so i'm watching her like a hawk (poor girl!).
I don't like to tempt fate, but i really think she's on the up. I'll let you know what the bloods tell us tomorrow. the vet couldn';t believe the change in her. Although, once again i was dead proud. She made a comment about the possibility of her jumping around a bit more when blood was taken now she's feeling better. My little girl stood stock still and ate her treats . Cue very impressed vet, and very proud mummy. Once again, thank you for your support, i've been so worried about her. Now she's getting better i'm realising even more how unwell she was! Ros |

She continues to improve daily, i coulodn't believe how fast she ate her feed this morning . Bless her, she's back to being a muddy, cheeky madam, and she looks so much better too. She actually is looking a bit better than before sh got ill, now she's not so fat . Thanks everyone |
