the sale of horses when a quality mare like Bint Charismma is STILL for sale!and at at such a low price. a sad reflection of the currant market it seems if I didnt have so many crimbo daughters she could come and live in my little herd in an instant. she has proved she is a good producer of top class foals, an asset to any breeding programme. for heavens sake people, dont look a gift horse in the mouth and this mare IS a gift at that price!

If I could, I would! I'd dearly love to win the lottery...then I could buy all these wonderful horses!!!! As it is, I have my loan mare coming, and the yard is at capacity....
Sad reflection of todays economic situation I think...unfortunately!

I've noticed her, she is a gorgeous mare and like you say a very good price. Someone will be very lucky to get such a good mare at that price! |

Many of us would have her like a shot, but with the doom and gloom people are being more careful before adding to their herds. For reasons other than the ecomomic situation, I am rationalising the horses I am keeping, but prefer to go down the loan route first, provided I can be satisfied about the home. |

If I wasn't still paying terms for my gal, I'd snap her up - she's stunning, someone's going to be VERY lucky! |

I'll join the ranks of "If I only had the cash" it's not the keeping, can manage that, it's that big lump of cash needed to buy in the first place she really is a lovely mare and hope she gets a fab home |

Lyndilou, does he count them? you could keep shuffling stables and paddocks, another grey could easily go un- noticed.......................... |

The trick is to have more than 2 of any colour so you can convince OHs that they are seeing things and no, you've always had 4 (or 5, or 6...) greay |

We said once that one of ours must have greyed out when a new grey appaered - non horsey relatives believed it too! |

I had a new loan mare (owners lost their stabling and grazing) for nearly three months before my husband noticed. To a non horsey person she was very like one of my other mares and as they never seemed to be in the same area of the field at the same time he didn't notice. Then one day he looked out of the window and saw them standing next to each other and said "Who is that horse?" so I said Flyte (my mare) and he said "No, next to her" so I said "Oh, that's Fizzy, do you remember I told you about her". With a puzzled look on his face he said "oh, that's right" as he didn't want to have to admit that he didn't listen when I spoke to him!!!!
There are ways, Lynda, one just has to be cunning.

Got a brill idea Lynda (and I hope your OH doesn't read this). You could say that she is a visiting mare and the owner couldn't afford the stud fee/keep, so you have HAD to keep the mare as payment - an please don't call me devious, it simply not true

IMO people are simply being responsible. With cost going up and the uncertainty inpeoples financial futures surely no-one in their right mind is taking on more at the moment.
For many buying her would not be an issue but keeing her might

Yvonne, I know this is just the tip of the iceburg, and we are now going to see far more horses up for sale this winter , if certain breeders had not covered so many mares in the past and had left mares empty for a few years maybe we would have been able to weather the economic storm we are about to face. it breaks my heart when I read that breeders proudly write they have covered ALL their mares again for next year I have heard some studs have up to 60 mares! what is going to happen??? your guess?? |

I believe that the 'credit crunch' is really biting now, & I think after Christmas there will be alot more horses on the market. I just hope that we don't see any horses suffering, because owners can't afford to feed, worm them etc. Lisa |
