Anubis is being a sod and keeps chewing his lead rope when I turn my back for just one second! He's been through 2 in a week and chewed his headcollar as well.
Can anyone recommend a leadrope that cannot be chewed?!

An unchewable rope would also be unbreakable in an incident - don't go there, please!
Try rubbing some nasty tasting/smelling substance along the piece that he chews (cribbox?), or better still make sure he is occupied whilst tied up (haynet).
Hope this helps

Its only the top part he chews and any rope I get is always tied to twine so he can get away no matter what the rope is made of. I was thinking of a show style rope with a chain and leather but not too expensive. This would still be tied to twine as I want to make sure he can always get free. |

How old is he? I would definately first start by checking that hes not chewing because of any pain in his mouth or teeth, before resorting to putting anything nasty-tasting on his leadrope. He might be trying to tell you something
Best of luck

He's 7 and had his teeth checked recently. He's always mouthed things anyhow. He does it more when he has an audience so it is a show off thing. He's not in pain - one look at his cheeky "honestly I wasnt doing it mummy" face is enough to prove that! |

cribox comes in a spray solution these days.... ok so you have to spray it every 2 or 3 days but it works eventually. |

Hi. It might be worth trying one of the cheaper polyprop leadropes, you know the ones that would burn your hands if they pull away, every horse i have seen do this seems to roll the lead rope in their front teeth and it makes sort of a squeek, i am sure its this noise or the feeling that the squeek makes against their teeth that they like, the poly ones shouldnt make the same noise or give same sensation. Also a friends horse used to do this all the time. He went through loads of ropes and they tried everything to stop it, so in the end they gave up and attached a small piece of rope to the side metal fastenings on the nose part of the headcollar, it dangles down at the side and he can grab a chew., and despite us all having misgivings that it might make the problem worse it had the opposite effect. he still grabs this when his headcollar is put on but has stopped everything else. It looks a bit odd but it has worked. so who am i to judge. one more little thing. Twine if you mean the orange bale swine, doesnt break loose, its incredibly strong, i have seen tie rings ripped out of walls, headcollars break, even the metal fittings break, and the baleatwine is still intact. The only time i have seen it break is when its old and frayed. You can get breakaway connectors if your worried about it. Sorry if i am telling you how to suck eggs. Good luck with the rope chewing, i am sure he thinks its fab fun:) |

What about puutting a short length og hosepipe over the rope? He'd still be able to chew the part that was tied but would stop him chewing the section between his head and the wall. |

Have the same problem - cribox works a treat for us and it's so funny to see their face when they get it Bit sticky to use and gets everywhere, but I haven't tried the spray. |

Why not try tying an old chewed lead rope to the ring your tying him to then he can chew that?
I used to have a gelding Boris that loved to chew things so i gave him an old jumper of mine and he used to stand sucking it with his eyes closed When Dinki was teething he was in real pain and he used to nuzzle my boots so i would take them off and he could chomp on the leather. He was that bad that the vet gave him bute as he would barely eat.
You could also try tying treats like a swede up as well as his haynet to distract him, cheaper than new ropes! |

Why not just use a length of chain with a clip on one end for the headcollar and breakable string where it attaches to the wall ring?
Leave the chain there all the time and use his lead rope for leading, not tying up. |

Chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, fantastic mover but bit long in the back! do you know him, my heart went all fluttery when i read that. I loved that horse and my mum gave him back as he was on loan and used to bite terribly and attacked her and our foal one day and she said that was enough. Broke my heart. |
