Had to share it as nobody at home.... I for the first time in 8 years a, rode with a fouresant tabbard and will carry on doing so.. B, Rode on my own..although i always used to but Now everybody around us has either given up moved on or work commitments etc so dont really ride now nights are drawing in or tend to be showing competing at weekends so decided this morning to tack up and get on... Slight problem nothing sturdy enough to get on and leg was a little cluncky and felt it moving around a tadge!! but 1,2,3, and up and i was on board!! I rode a full circuit ride only about 5 miles which is quite busy roads some of it, then obvously madam knows every stretch of grass and canter track as daughter does them all on her!! This was the first time in 3 years after leg reconstruction to ride a full circuit and alone, and fan anne has not been sat on for 3 weeks!! I bl**** well ached last stretch home pain was acceptable my bad leg can hopefully only strenthen hopefully. Also i was nervous being on my own as fan anne!! can be a tadge forward and spooky on her own but to be honest she only spooked 3 times and it was nothing at all.. Most definetly at the moment i know i am unbalanced as i am not moving flowing with her if people understand me!! Also i felt my underside of thigh on bad leg felt higher, almost like the muscles are making it feel 2 inches higher that side!! Thought about dropping stirrup leather a hole but then i would be riding one leg longer than the other!! So any advice there welcome.. Also as i was on my own whers as before i rode never thought about anything just did it or as recently in company riding dont think about what am doing .. it just comes natrally.. I was today thinking it through to myself as am doing it which is a little crazy silly things like slowing down, putting pressure on/off , going into trot!! thinking about my ballence !! why think about it!!nerves maybe ? Just really happy ive done it.. Never know might be heading straight up to the gallops sooner than later!! on my own.. Proberly quite trivial to most on here but for me it was magic and the bubbling brook we rode along side usually i would not have taken any notice of, but on my own it was beautifull to see and hear....

it doesn't sound like nothing at all, congratulations!
So many people take hacking out for granted (I used to), but there are also so many people who don't do it, for a variety of reasons.
Be very proud of yourself that you are now a very happy hacker! |

well done
Just a thought re: your balance - when you walk do you lean over to take weight off your bad leg? Maybe your muscles between your ribcage and hip have shortened and thats why you feel as though your bad leg is higher. Try to think of widening the gap between the lower rib and hip bone, keep your shoulders level though, don't lean. It sounds weird but if you try to do everything in your mind then your body will follow.
Give yourself a big pat on the back for getting on and doing something which was obviously a big deal for you .

Thanks everyone.. Lucy thought about what you said.. mentioned this to my mum then we remembered .... no laughing anybody!! My measurements around bad leg are larger.. I measured it and its 3 inches larger around than my right leg from above the knee all up... Then in the groin around 1 1/2 inches bigger than my other leg So where i have for past 17 months been having physio its more built up or carrying more fluid than the good leg.. When i get back next week will have a word with physio then also have a word with a personal trainer at gym to help me build good leg up more!!as i think this will even me.. As when i say i felt unbalenced it feels like my bad leg is up bent more. Unless anybody has a better idea..

That's brilliant Nutter.
People should stop 'looking down' on the Happy Hacker. I know a few quite successful people (in dressage, racing etc.) who are terrified of hacking out, even in company, let alone on their own.
And..from a horse/rider point of view 'Hacking' (particularly alone) is quite a big test of trust in one another and shouldn't be dismissed the way it is.
It's lovely that you also had the time to appreciate your surroundings and how you and your horse were interacting, something you may have missed in company.

well done you you should very rightly be impressed and pleased with yourself here's to many more outings sounds also like your physio has been doing a good job with your rebuilt leg, silly suggestion but could you even yourself out by perhaps padding out your un-physio'd leg for the time being ??? all the best to you |

Brilliant news!
I have an old knee injury and that makes it hard to ride some days on the bad days I need a longer stirrup, definatly see what you can find out, mine built up for some reason but couldn't find out why |

Jolly well done Nutter. This is no small thing. I started again after 10 years and I was extremely nervous for a little while. Thank God for Ollie who was so patient with me. Good for you girl, keep going |

Happy hacking is great, if there was only one thing I could do with my horse i'd keep hacking! Glad you're back in the saddle and out and about. It's just a shame the roads are getting more dangerous, a young girl was knocked off her horse this week just down the lane from me. I think she wasn't too badly hurt but the horse had to be operated on and apparently the car went to drive off but luckily there was a witness. |
