On Saturday night we were late getting up to do the horses and as it was wet and windy they were all running about. Angel was doing a very nice pepe-le-pew style canter down the hill when suddenly her legs went from under her, she hit the ground with her shoulder and neck first . I heard a crack and she started thrashing about on the floor before getting up and cantering off - phew!!! I thought she had broken a leg but fortunately she had just snapped the front chest fastenings on her rug (2nd time on!! )
Sunday - arrived at Rio's field in the morning, re-arranged his rug and noticed a small rip in the bottom corner at the back. Looked down his legs and noticed a huge cut from just above the near-side hock right down the cannon bone and ending at the back of the fetlock and a similar smaller cut on the off-side . He held the worst leg up so I could see and stood like a rock whilst I cleaned it up and covered it in Germaline. I managed to scrounge some antibiotics from my friend and the vet is coming out tomorrow.
I booked a visit for today but the only vet doing visits is really awful - she could upset a rocking horse
So, I now have 2 lame horses but it could have been so much worse.

Oh poor you. Knowing it could have been worse doesn't always make it feel any better. Imagine having a vet you can't rely on. Makes me realise how lucky we are up here, with our vets.
Hope your horses get better soon, and I hope your week is better than your weekend. |

What a nightmare for you, thank God she didn't break anything! A rug is at the end of the day replaceable! I hope your boy's cuts are only minor, do lets us know! Leighx |

Hi Sarah
The old mare that is in with Rio is a bit of a tart and there is a Suffolk Punch stallion in the fields next door so I think he was just staking his claim and kicked out and got his legs over the fence.
We have plain wire on our side but in the middle of the fencing is some old barbed wire which runs through the middle of the hedgeline. Next door has old floorboards & posts with an electric fence in front of that to deter the stallion.
Luckily, he is a very good patient I can't do anything with his legs on my own though cos he just walks round in circle trying to see what I'm looking at

That's all you need - him challenging the stallion! Doesn't sound like there's much you can do about the barbed wire - I hate the stuff . Like if you ride up to Lynhurst to get into the woods there's barb wire that runs all the way along the path on the right. Trouble is half of it is on the floor hidden by the grass! All it takes is a bird to fly out at the wrong time to make your horse spook and possibly into the wire on the floor not realising it's there!
At least he's being good enough to let you treat the cuts!
Hope they are both better soon

Crystal has managed to cut her leg as well...halfway between her knee and her fetlock on her left foreleg. She was protecting the young shettie from YO's show hunter gelding, and she's got injured! So she's laid up for between 3-4 weeks....she isn't lame, just looks worse than it is. Hopefully it'll heal ok. When I pick up new girly, it'll be 14 years to the day that Crystal arrived....is that freaky or what?

What rotten luck, hope they are recover soon. A Suffolk Punch is quite a rarity these days I believe, hope he stays his side of the fence! |

Thanks Guys
The vet came out yesterday - he is going to have a scar but all seems to be healing well . The swelling has gone down and he is sound and leaving lovely skid-marks all over the field .
Whilst she was there I got the vet to complete his AHS silhouette whilst I pulled some hair for the DNA test. Posted it off yesterday so pretty soon he'll be mine officially
Sooo excited, its like having a new ned all over again
Angel is now back to doing her "circling shark" impression at tea-time so I think she is getting back to normal. She canters a 10m circle in front of the gateway and lunges at anyone brave enough to get close to her with her teeth open .
Madmare - I hope Crystal gets better soon & good luck with your new girly.
Lin - hopefully see you at Warwick, I'm trying to get a day off for good behaviour
