Am considering changing my feed to Blue Chip Original, as I've read lots of good things about it, and it's supposed to be suitable for all sorts, including pregnant/ lactating mares and foals.
Have any of you used it, and is it as good as its supposed to be ?

Yes I have used it for about 6 weeks before my mare went to stud as I wanted her in optimum beeding condition, (she was a maiden and I had not had her for very long) to me it seemed to work as far as her looking as good as I had seen her. However, I have another mare who I think was not looking as well as I would have liked and I spoke to my vet about it and he advised against(Blue Chip) it as it is heavily cereal based and suggested Top Spec I looked at that but at the same time found the one made by Baileys which seemed to me to be just as good and £13 cheaper. so I am using that we shall see. I just want to make sure that I am giving all of the required Vits and Minerals and this one (Baileys) seems to do the trick. This only my personal experience. Sue |

I have used Top Spec Balancer (as I was told it is cereal-free) and Top Spec Mare and Youngstock (No. 3 I think) supplement for my broodmares during pregnancy and after. The mare and foal have the supplement in their feed at night and both look very well on it ! See link: http://www.arabianlines.com/forum1/topic_new.asp?TOPIC_ID=29895

I used Blue Chip some years ago when I had the 2yo PBA Aldwych Arabesque as she was already on it when I bought her from BabsR. She looked superb, did very well in hand over the next 3 years, and her photo was used in the Blue Chip ad for a while. More recently I have gone onto Lo-Cal after having a cob with laminitis and now cob, retired PBA and competing PBA are all doing well on it. It is cheaper than Blue Chip, which could be a consideration as they both seem to work well. |

I have never tried blue chip or any of the more expensive ones. Lo-cal worked fine for us - brilliant stuff altho I did find it harder to get weight off him. Daft because its a low calorie feed but I think in balancing the diet a few more calories get absorbed.
Following lots of recommendations here I about to try Pink Powder for the winter but he will be back on seaweed again in the spring. |

We used Blue chip on one of our horses that had come back from loan in an awful condition. It really did boost him and restored him back to how I'd expected him to be for showing. We only used it for 2 months (2 sacks worth) and then weaned him off it and now he's holding his condition well and doesn't need anything extra.
We were warned that if you reduce the blue chip supplement too quickly that it does bring them out in bumps and most feed changes should happen slowly anyway as horses guts are sensitive.
I have in the past used Baileys Outshine. A few bags were given to me to try and I can recommend that as well although it is expensive. The vits and oils it contains brings out the condition of the horse and really made our boys gleam. |

I think it depends on the horse, my TB did very well on it, but my arab is more suited to Allen and Paige Calm and Condition. A show judge told me many years ago that the best thing for condition is to soak any feed and make it like Ready Break. Apparently they absorb more food that way! |

Not keen on Blue Chip. Tried it many years ago and found it sent them doolally!! Had youngsters rearing up in the stable and throwing themselves about etc.
We now use Baileys Stud balancer- much much cheaper, not winding them up and they look great on it. Used it for a long time now and would stick with this one for ours. |

Have tried them all.
I bought a 4 yr old Arab in poor condition and we used Blue Chip + Baileys No 4 Conditioning Cubes, but it made him hot so I took him off the Blue Chip and put him on Topspec (At the time I was sponsoered by them)I now feed all of mine on Baileys Lo-Cal and my brood mare on the Baileys Stud Balancer. They all have plenty of condition and My hot boy has quietened down a lot. I also feed Baileys No6 Endurance Mix and love it.
Apart from the Lo-Cal being much cheaper (Good for the Credit Crunch) I find it very good.

I replied to this earlier and said would see how the Baileys Stud balancer worked and I can honestly say that its far and away the best that I have used and as others have said its so much cheaper, my mares are having it a reduced amount at the moment as they are early pregnancy but I will be slowly giving them more as time goes by, cant rate it high enough. As has been said by others, Bailey's stud balancer, you can't beat it. We are really lucky as my partner Terry Madden is sponsored by Bailey's with his endurance horses so we feed most of their products as I have a couple of very big warmbloods whom I compete in dressage so we feed, No 3 Stud cubes, Stud Balancer, Endurance Mix and Outshine when competing. Through the winter months they all have the stud balancer as a vit/mineral balancer and then the endurance horses swap onto Outshine for competing alongside their Endurance Mix. The warmbloods are good doers so despite a heavy workload do well on the Economy cubes topped up with stud balancer.

I used Topspec.
I chose them as they gave a full list of ingredients - something Bluechip would not do! I wanted to know exactly what I was putting into my horses. They all looked very well on it and I would recommend it too. |

My horse is being fed Blue Chip to good effect. Tried Topspec but it coincided with a looney period so wont feed that one again (but quite possible something else caused the temporary insanity) They only have a cup full alongside the normal nuts, mix, chaff etc.. We have previously used the Allen and Page Calm and Condition and that worked too.

Used Blue Chip many moons ago for my little Tibby who was a 30 year old pony with no teeth what so ever she couldn't manage hay used to spit it out in little balls that long ago it was a relatively new concept so the pro biotic helped her survive for a few more years without doubt in the same situation again with an elderly family member its the answer or false teeth |

I believe that Blue Chip is good but please be careful when feeding any balancer with other feeds as you could upset the vitamin and mineral balance, which could be the reason for the 'looneys'
Most balancers are meant to be fed with hay etc and not with other feeds as they are properly balanced. Some of them are only really meant for horses without any real feed problems. |

Hi,
I havent tried blue chip but have fed equilibra for years now and its really good.
I only feed Alfa A oil and equilibra to both mine and they are both in lovely condition.
I used to feed a whole conconction of things hi-fi ,build up mix, seaweed, oil, equilibra and they were fine but cost a fortune and now only feeding alfa a oil and equilibra they actually look even better !

hi have used blue chip and found loony reaction also although though horse looked amazing! lol ,
top spec is excellent and always my 1st choice if going to 'spend' however i have used with much success for 3 years now Triple Crown EQUIPOWER ( now owned by badmington feeds) really good balancer and definately dont need hardly any hard feed when giving that and has kept condition throughout
another good cheaper but still very good is dodson and horrell 'suregrow' meant for growing stock is good for putting 'careful' condition on all types i feed 1 mug a day -
i use Equipower on a 15.2 pure bred 2 mugs a day and 15.3 AA they look good and love it ! x |
