i wonder if anyone had had any experience of a chipped bone?
Gucc has been to the vets today and had xray's which has revealed a chipped bone on the indide of his fetlock joint.
He is being refered to Leahurst, but i just wondered what the outlook was, if he doesnt get an ifection in the joint when/if they remeove the bone chip.
I am devestated, as he is only just 5

Hi Zakyle,
Do you know how big the chip is?
The prognosis for a chip is usually very good - tb horses in training often have them removed (usually keyhole surgery),
and make a full recovery very quickly.
Hope this puts your mind at rest a bit |

hi, thanks for your replies
the ship is triangular in shape, and it is kind of at the inside top the bone as if you are looking at it from the front view.
(not very technical sorry)
its quite hard to tell how big it is, because i am not sure if the xrays were to scale, |

| I think that these are generally quite easy to remove (as Sam says with Keyhole surgery). Best of luck. |

Sheena was x-rayed on Thursday due to lameness and after a few xray's showed a chipped bone on her fetlock but vets didn't think that was the cause of her lameness and after nerve blocking showed it wasn't, they thought it could have been there since birth so wasn't a problem. They did say if it was, it could be removed by key hole surgery and would be a good outcome.
Sheena is currently at Leahurst for further tests and a bone scan next week, I am gutted so understand how you feel.

So sorry to hear that....keep us posted on her progress, i will keep my fingers crossed for her, May see her there if i get news hopefully on Monday, when Gucc can go |

Thanks, she has to wait till the end of next week for a MRI scan so looks like she will be in for a while. Keeping everything crossed for you as understand how hard it is. We may cross paths at Leahurst lol.

Em,
Any news on when you will have mri scan?
I have heard from the vet that they will operate to remove Gucc's chip.
Dont know whether to feel glad or sad!! Just need to wait for an admittance date?
Hopefully you will have good results from the bone scan

I've had 2 operated on for fetlock "joint mice".
1 was a traumatic injury & recovered very quickly & remained sound after surgery.
The other had OCD, a growth disease, & though the surgery improved him he remained arthritic long-term. |

She is having the MRI bone scan on Wednesday then has to go into isolation for 2 days as she will be radioactive!
Can they operate through key hole? I know how you are feeling, it has been one of the worst things I have done having to leave Sheena there.
Is it Leahurst you will be going to?

yes it will be leahurst, i think the consultant is named Ellen Singer, she says that it needs to be removed, but it depends on the damage to the joint/soft tissues as to the prognosis.
Fingers crossed for both of themXX
thanks Ella, that has given me some hope as they suspect injury rather than joint problems, though they will xray two hind fetlocks to be sure.
It will be keyhole, so hopefully not a long recovery.

My gelding had keyhole surgery on his stifle in May. He was absolutely fine within a few hours, he just looked a bit like a patchwork pony  . The only thing that makes it a bit dangerous is the anasethic, but that is the case with all surgery where horses have to go under.
I know how you feel Emily, Andre had a bone scan back in Feb and I burst into tears when the vet said I couldn't see him for 3 days . It didn't show up anything at all. I hope the scan finds the cause of Sheena's lameness for you .

Elizabeth - I couldn't believe it when they said she will need isolation for 2 days! I have found it all very hard, the hospital is about an hours drive from home and they have strict visiting times so not very easy to see her everyday. Hope Andre is doing ok give him a hug from his sister x

Hi My mare connie was operated on for a chip in her fetlock when she was seven she has done 6 seasons of Endurance since then and done up to 75 miles in a day and 100 miles in 2 days

Not had a chance to logon until now....How has Sheena gotten on? Hope the news is positive.
Gucc went to leahurst on Monday, but they have refused to operate on him as he also has L vasculitis and sent us back home. Im truly gutted as they say the longer the chip is there the more damage it is causing. He has been put on a high dose of steroids to try and shift the vasculitis scabs enough for them to operate.
Apparently if they operate now, it could mean the joint healing could be compromised. And having to have him put down. |

I am so sorry to hear that Gucci has been in the wars again.
Just to say that my mare had to have 6 chips removed from her fetlock. She was 18 at the time so probably one of their older patients for such surgery! There were no complications from the surgery. She is now 25 and as fit as a fiddle. Am riding her and she has never shown any signs of any arthritis or anything else developing. I was very careful with her rehab - she had lengthy box rests with increasing walks in hand and when I brought her back into work I took it very slowly.
I dont know anything about vasculitis but hopefully when that has cleared up you will be able to go through with the surgery and things can get back to normal for you both.

Hi All,
Gucc finally went to Leahurst on Monday, he has had his op to remove the chip, which went well. they have said that they expect him to become sound Infact when i rang today for an update they said he had walked out sound today
Just hoping that we have no post op problems and that the vasculitis does not affect the wound sites.

Ang, great news to hear the op went well!!! Wishing him a speedy and full recovery.
Sheena is home and sound but just needs a few months rest before she comes back into work. We just have to hope it doesn't return as still a mystery as to what it really was. We have to put it down to a ligament pull and hopefully no fracture will appear on the next lot of X-rays which could potential happen yet but I am hopeful it isn't.
