Just being nosy really and also thought we could share tips etc. My mare is 10 years old, 14.3 and a really good doer.
In summer she is on only grass and in winter gets a handful of Dodson & Horrell (sp) pasture mix, chaff, multivits and sugarbeat (when its really cold). She is on light/medium work and a tad on the fat side at the mo but not that worried as going into winter. We do have really good quality hay which is another reason I dont feed her too much.
This does seem to work really well for Kassie, anyone like to share what they feed etc?

I have a hippo here who has been on a handful of chaff with a scoop of Surelimb throughout the summer... Apart from being on the large side, she looks super
Throughout the winter she has pasture mix, chaff and Surelimb. I may have to reassess this as she is now in work, albeit light/medium.
We too have excellent hay and grazing.

Ad lib hay,all year round as our grass isn't always green, and for 3 months it is under snow anyway. Horses are not given hard feed in the summer, most get fat on thin air, good old QH's they are the North American version of British Natives.
In winter, everything gets soaked alfa/timothy cubes, soaked oats and BOSS. Usual mineral licks available. |

Mine have spillers nuts, alfalfa chaff, seaweed, garlic and suger-beet in the depths of winter. They are both young and have done well over the summer(at least I was told it was summer) but they always have a handful when they come in just to keep them interested.

Pasha is a fatty but also an oldie so he has: Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer, Baileys All Round Endurance Mix and Baileys Alfafa Blend... he only has tiny amounts of each though (apart from the Balancer). I also feed him Horse Hage High Fibre Haylege (as much as he wants) and he has good grass all day everyday In the winter he sometines has a spoonful of his friends speedi beet, but I have to watch it or he piles on the pounds!!
When he was younger he didn't get any feed during the summer (very mean mum) and had just Dengie Alfa A and Showmix in the winter x |

Out door herd get top notch homemade haylaeg and lots of veggies through the winter. Sheltered spot for them and good rugs - come spring they are round, shiney and full of beans
Haylage and staple feed here is sugar beet, unmollassed chop (like Leighs Senior) and our bespoke mix (20% protein with distillers pellets). Multivits and oil depending on who they are
Fatties are on Happy Hoof and a few H&P cubes
Oldies with wobbly teeth love their A&P Fast Fibre
All horses have ready access to salt & min licks too |

Gilly (23 and pretty much an excitable field ornament) gets A&P Calm and Condition, Happy Hoof, Formula 4 Feet and Liquid Devils Claw. The Formula 4 Feet was supposed to be just for the minis but he loves the stuff so gets it too. Plus apples and carrots, and Blue Chip Bites for treats if we've been shopping as Tesco One small feed in summer depending how good the grass is, two bigger feeds in winter plus ad lib hay, quantities adjusted depending how he's doing. |

I'm with NatH and only use a handful of Safe & Sound at the mo plus hay of course. He doesn't need anything more than that as we still have grass in plenty. |

Cinny gets Speedibeet, chaff, pegasus nuts and barley, except in the Spring/early Summer when she made do with just grass. Yesterday went back to just grass as lots of grass for them to eat in new field.
Also in winter hay.
Mostly play it by ear, ie how much grass available and how much work she doing....

Mine has grass nuts (like the northern crop dryers variety) and chaff with seaweed ACV and garlic in summer. I increase it in winter as necessary with ad lib hay and drop the supplements for Pink Powder. |

My seven year old and two year old who are good doers get 1/2 a scoop of Page and Allen intolerance mix (contains no cereals or sugar and is the only vegetarian mix on the market) all year. They are out 24/7 on good grazing, in the winter they also get hay, alfa a oil and readigrass. Michelle |

At the moment my TB is on Top Spec Leisuretime Balancer and Top Spec Calmer with great results, he looks fab! My Arab gelding is on fresh air just now as he is looking a bit on the fat side and could well produce twins at any time!!

Dennis gets D+H Safe and Sound plus Newmarket Joint Supplement and Cider Vinegar.
Mo, Minnie and Holly get Mollichaff Hoof Kind
Ailsa gets Happy Hoof or Healthy Hooves - whichever her owner buys and Foumula4Hooves.
All get HiFi Good Doer and D+H High Fibre Cubes in their nut balls.
Great tip to put chaff in the nut balls as it stops the nuts coming out so fast. Someone on H+H forum told me that one and its works brilliantly!

Yes, I;ve used Baileys Stud Balancer on a mare with the same problem - she seemed fine on it (didn't lose any weight but didn;t put any more on either !) |

My mare is on D & H Mare & youngstock mix while babe is on the foal mix, trouble is I'm not using the foal mix quick enough & it does go off. I was thinking of putting them both on Winergy growth. Does anyone use this? I think it's pretty expensive, but I don't mind if I don't have to throw any more foal mix away!! They also have gorgeous smelling readigrass as their chaff & it slows gutbucket mare down some so baby can eat hers before mum steals it! They get ad lib hay when they're in & the grass is good. |

My 3/4 bred yearling has been on two feeds of Baileys Stud balancer at the recommended levels mixed with Dengie Hi fi lite(just to bulk it out and slow down her eating) dampened down a bit with some water. She is strip grazed on good grass at the moment, has a bit of hay while she is grooomed, she has a multi mineral salt lick (which she ignores) and will have ad lib hay when she comes in for the night. Most importantly she has access to clean water 24/7.
Over the summer she has been lightly rugged when it has been wet, cold and windy as she unfortunately has no shelter to go in and she has been in for a few hours when it has been really hot and sunny.
When the grass gets scarcer and is of poorer quality she will have ad lib hay in the field. I have not continued to feed haylege as her breeder originally fed her as I understand that Dr Eustace of the Laminitis Clinic considers that this can lead to a more acidic gut environment and I am neurotic about any chance of laminitis.
She is looking good, is full of beans & mischief but is still good to handle and interested to learn. I do think the Baileys balencer is good and I will be changing to Baileys's Lo Cal when she has finished growing.
The Bailey's rep. will come out and check how your horse is doing free of charge so I have had her out once and will be arranging for her to have another look at her shortly, although I have no real concerns as she's looking so well.
Feeding is undoubtedly a minefield this is only what I do! |
