My mare needs to wear a grazing muzzle due to laminitis risk. She has worn the shires type made of webbing, but it rubs her poor nostrils badly (the headstrap part rubs her cheeks too) despite me putting tons of vaseline on it.

I am thinking of getting a greenguard muzzle as the nostrils are not covered by this design; but opinion on this make seems very varied. Has anyone used one on an arab? Do they rub? Does the horse constantly escape out of it? I'd have to use it with a fieldsafe headcollar, not greenguard's own as I would not risk her out in a 'collar without a breakpoint!

Thanks folks.

I personally wouldn't use a greenguard one, as they do seem to rub. The ones i have found best are the bestfriends muzzles. Similar in design to the shires, but with a clip. Both my section a, and my section c wear them and they haven't rubbed at all. It may be because they come up really big, and so there's little contact with the skin. Neither of them have managed to get it off either, despite a great deal of trying
Never tried one on my arab, but may will have to at some point, as she's going to be porky

I have 2 mares that wear them all night while out ( in during the day) they both have aerborn/ shires fabric ones but the owners have sewn sheepskin round the top of the muzzles and put sheepskin down each cheekpiece( with the velcro bits you can buyto put on nosebands) and they haven't rubbed at all

Another mare wears exactly the same muzzle with out the sheepskin and it's rubbed her awfully.

get your sewing kit out!

I can vouch for the sheepskin. I had to sew it into my little pony's muzzle as it rubbed her under her chin. No more rubs now!

My friend used the greenguard muzzle and her horse managed to keep getting it off or to the side......She wasn't impressed with it.

Hope this helps

I have heard of some problems with the greenguard ones not staying in place and getting caught under the lip etc but I think that was with ponies so I'm not sure about fit on an Arab.

I use the standard bestfriends muzzles on my two minis with headcollars that have a leather crown piece so will snap in an emergency but tough enough for two naughty ponies that break out of the normal fieldsafe ones! I agree with adding sheepskin or fleece too - it does stop any rubbing and bestfriend do sets of fleece if you want the velcro kind.

I used one.... never again.... it rubbed really badly even though i shaped it in hot water and it was so heavy.... he also managed to shove it to one side and eat huge mouthfuls of grass!!
I have found the summer so hard trying to keep the weight down! roll on winter!

My gelding has broke 2 muzzles so far this year, he broke the first one within 24hrs of me buying it! He also has a good knack of flicking off his nose very easily, in the end I resorted to tying it to a leather headcollar with a bit of breakable string

I've just starting using one from dinky rugs, its got sheepskin round the noseband and has velcro strips that can come away if they get caught, seems to be working well so far.

Thanks everyone. I've stuck to the shires type with lots of satin sewn on (slides so doesn't rub). Just got to figure out a way to line the inside without her being able to eat the lining! She did get out of it one day (by rubbing on the gate, I think), gobbled grass and then felt very sorry for herself with a bloated tummy. Fortunately she doesn't seem to have realised how she got out of it, and so far (touch wood) has not repeated the deed. She does hate it, but seems to have forgiven me now for putting it on - at least she is getting some grass!
