Thank you all so much for your replies, I have returned to Saracen.....Rupert wouldn't touch the SS and he wasn't a happy boy. After reading the responses, having a few PM's and googling SS I felt there was no way I would continue with it. Many thank again Anna |

I have to admit I do like the theory behind it, it's just very different in principle. It works for some and not others. You have to do what's best for your horse, I think I listened to too many people and was swayed by them into trying SS. I won't be again and will use what works for us. |

it worked brilliantly for all of mine but as they are now on loan they are fed differently! They still look fab and i wouldnt dream of saying they must be fed this way or that but i will consider putting them both back on it when they come home if it still suits their needs! |

I've starting feeding Winergy Equilibrium having had it recommended to me by lots of people. It's fantastic - my horses look fabulous and are calm but with plenty of energy. The research behind it is extensive and impressive(over 15 years, tracing broodmares, to foals, to youngstock to horses at the peak of competition and into senior years) and it's competitively priced. My older horse can be quite fussy but he always eats up the Winergy - something he never did with the Baileys he was on before. I'm not surprised - Winergy smells sooooo lovely. I take a big whiff of it every time I mix the feeds. It's a complete feed but I do tend to bulk it out with a chop just to give them a bit more to chew on - using Marksway Mollichop Showshine at the mo which is low in sugar and high in oil. It's cherry flavoured and again the horses really seem to love it. |

Well I've been feeding SS 6 years now & still think it's great! We have year-round grazing & haylage so I don't feed v much. My stress-head horse has totally lost his old feed-time behaviours of circling/box walking/head tossing/fence walking now that there's no sugar hit to crave ;-)
I find all animals (& humans!) take a while to adjust to liking a "healthy" diet if they're used to high sugar/fat/salt or whatever. |

Must admit I agree with you ella, although I now use Primero Total, but with unmollassed beet pulp and Alfa A soaked. My horses were always sane and cool headed on SS, but one of my horses didnt do too well on their balancer, so I changed. |

Same here, I have fed it for nearly 8 years and dont find it fiddly at all! I buy all my supplements from a local mill as I really cant afford to buy just from Jane with my amount of horses but I cant see why everyone finds it so difficult to deal with. Unfortunately most horses are so used to a sugar overload these days that when they are tried on SS they will pretty much turn their noses up as it is so natural. I agree that there are some horses it doesnt agree with but overall I will never go back to 'conventional' feeds, I find too often that people are scared to persevere with it and cant handle the amounts. I had 3 horses in here for full livery early on in the year and they were really fussy with it but it took a few weeks and by the end of it they were happily munching it and were nicer, calmer boys for it! I think the theory behind it is great but unfortunately things that are good for you, never taste so good as those that aren't. Altho we had problems and I no longer feed SS, I learned a lot and continue to feed as naturally as possible. |

Arabic I am the same as you I learnt from the principles and have just found alternatives that are very low sugar in order to get them eating the feed. Bramble is much happier on Equivit, graze on and speedibeet than she ever was on the alfaalfa. I really liked the total eclipse balancer as that put a real shine on her coat. |

I feed my arab gelding and my 29 year old pony gelding SS and they seem to love it- total eclipse is the only thing that has managed to put shine on my ponie's very long coat! I don't find I need to use too much of it either- but perhaps they are just good doers. I am lucky in that we are not far from SS yard at saxmundham so myself and a friend take turns to pick up the feed |
